Do You Need .dvd File To Burn Games ??

Hello all, I'm just wondering do you have to have a .dvd file burn games??. A few games i've aquired only came with an image file when un rared (iso, img, nrg, etc), I as far as i know you need a .dvd file to point out the layer break but can i burn them without it using Nero, cloncd, DVD Decrypter, etc ??
I only ask as i have quite a few games on my hard drive & only a few d/l dvd+r's left & i won't be able to afford some more for a few weeks (totally skint with xmas coming up).

I know that i can edit some of the .dvd files that i already have with notepad but does it matter if the .dvd file comes from an NTSC game or PAL game??
