Ok i will try and keep this short .
Its tuesday 21 .11 .2006 ( my birthday i might add )went out for lovely meal had a drink or 2 then thought i would come back and play my 360 but i cant connect to live as my gamertag is not showing on my dashboard . so after a long read up on forums it was suggested to remove the gamertag from hard drive then recover it from live ( and it worked ) great !! . now all of a sudden i played call of duty 3 and after 30 or so mins ( dont forget i had a drink it could of been longer ) the screen made this horrible hissing sound (like static interupting a tv )and showed interference on the screen and froze , so i had to re start machine and then it went further downhill as it restarted i got the 3 rings of death (red ones ). oh f--k i thought .what now ? i had my drive flashed about 5 weeks ago and on ringing microsoft they want it sent for repair . what am i suppose to do with the flashed drive . surely they will suss it when they receive it and like last time i had to send it off (before i had it flashd ) they sent me a supposibly new machine (more like a refurb ) any one else had this problem and any advise on whether i should track the guy down to convert it back before i send it off ? help if you can i would really appreciate constructive advise on this . thanks for reading .

I was told to convert it back first because if they know you've been tampering with it then it would void your warranty.

dude you have opened up your 360 so warranty is no good anyway. once open and security seal is broken then you dont have a leg to stand on regarding warranty.

the guy that did it was careful taking the seal off and replacing it but im not convinced he put it back careful enough . but i guess i got to get him to convert back if he can to original firmware brfore i send it off. pain in the ass really as this guy is only around at a certain event every 3 - 4 weeks and i just missed the last time he was around so im going to miss the next 3 weeks or so plus the time it takes them to fix it . im not impressed with the reliability of these damm 360's i got it in january and had to take it back to shops once and had to send it off another time to be replaced in august and now this again . microsoft should be paying us for the time wasted on owning one . bunch of p--c-s ! i say !! they just cant live up to the endurance of time .

Man that sucks. Atleast the problem with the launch 360s has been fixed now, but people who are sending their 360's in for repair are just getting other launch 360's in return. Everyone should get a new one. Especially now that MS is reporting that they're no longer losing money on manufacturing 360's.
On a side note for everyone, if you get the warrenty sticker successfully removed, save it on a piece of wax paper (like what stamps come on) instead of putting back on your 360. This way, if you need to reflash with the orig firmware and send it in for repair, then you got the sticker right there ready to reapply before you ship it out.

Does anyone think there is going to be someone who can just repair the 360 w/o worrying about going to microsoft?

Are you serious because someone else told me that they did the same thing. How long did it take you to get it back though?

Just send it back to them,
it's not illegal to flash your 360 because it is used to make a backup of your games on your pc,
it is illegal to play copied games if you dont own the original, just send it back to them and they will send you a new one, there is nothing they can do about it,
trust me im on my 3rd 360 now and each one has been flashed and they have replaced them no problem

ok say i send it back flashed , i havnt got a problem with that but it cost me £70 to get it flashed in the first place . by taking it back to charlie chang(who flashed it in the first place ) so that he can un-flash it there is a possibility that he will at a discount re- flash it once they send a replacement . or he might stick to his guns and charge me £70 again . basically i dont trust microsoft and there ability to send me a forever working xbox 360 cause i dont think they are capable of manufacturing one that will last! but that is just my opinion and im sure of a few of you out there's opinions to! ! anyhow im stuck with the burden of forever paying 3rd party people to flash my drive so i appeal to you in the know PLEASE can anyone tell me how simple or risky it is to be able to flash it myself (what do i need for example) appreciate all your good knowledge 'i dont want to appear dumb but i need a step by step very in-depth guide on how to acheive it or if anyone thinks it is tooooo risky for a dumbass ( ha! ha ! hence the nick name )to do it myself . and how do i get the tools to open the cover on the xbox. many thanks for you all reading this .

It is illegal, however, to take their firmware, reverse-engineer it, and modify it. ;)

dumbass37 there are a million on one posts and tuts all over these forums to help you out. just search and you will find step by step instructions and also xbox-scene is a great site for tuts also.
as far as how difficult it is to flash the 360 it all depends on your experience with PC and electronic equipment. Honestly the hardest part is taking the damn 360 apart but thats from someone with over 13 years experience with toying with electronics.
the most important thing about flashing the firmware is maning a backup of the original one on your drive. Ive seen countless formus where ppl have not carried out this basic step and end up with a screwed flash and cant get back to the original.
