ok, im new to this. i bought some 4x dvd+r's today. but while reading it, it says there could be some errors if burning with say a 2x burner. without firmware upgrades. how do i find out if there is a firmware upgrade.. im totally lost on this. im new to all this. thanks before hand

I would assume you will be limited to burning at 2X if you used 4X media in a 2X burner.

It would help if you listed your burner model and make if you want firmware help...

Yeah, thats a warning they put on all 4x media. It's generally not a problem but it has caused some non-repairable problems in the past for a few. Buying the better quality media can help.
