My friend is going to get a 360 and get the firmware modded, but he wants to make sure he gets a Hitachi. Is there a way to make sure he gets one?

Don't go to Wal-Mart. Every single 360 that came from there that I've seen has been a Samsung. EBGames or Gamestop is your best bet.

Here in Australia, we don't have any of these "Wal-Marts" you refer to. We have K-Marts maybe that's the same thing.
We have EBgames. I'll tell him to check there. I was reading somewhere that the premiums are usually Hitachis and the cores are usually Samsungs. Any truth to this?

K-marts and Wal-marts aren't the same thing, but they are similar. Just out of curiosity why does he want a Hitachi?

Because I have a Hitachi, and he wants to have the same firmware as mine as well so that if a firmware ban comes out, we can both just revert to the original firmware and wait until another firmware mod is made.
Yeah, it seems kinda silly, but oh well lol.

Yeah, especially since when it really comes down to it Samsungs are the better drives to have.

Media compatibility is the biggest reason Samsungs are better. Also the new dummy SS files found in Tiger Woods 07 and Gears of Wars that won't allow Hitachis to read retail copies of those games without a firmware update don't affect Samsungs. Also since day one Samsungs have always been ahead of Hitachis. Samsungs were flashed 1st. Firmware improvements have always happened on Samsungs 1st. Don't get me wrong flashed Hitachis can work great too, but Samsungs are just a bit better.
The latest thing is there is talk of being able to put Xbox 1 games and 360 games that will fit onto single layer DVD-5. Note they still have to be ripped from originals and patched with the SS files and at this point this is only for Samsung drives.

oh sh%T , the single layer firmware is only sammy, damn.. as u could notice i have a hitachi. Do you if the new birdy with xtremem w media check is ok to play gow or tiger woods?

You need OPA 2.3 to play the retail TW or GOW. I personally like the Hitachi better because it's easier to flash.

Lol. I don't see what the problem with the Hitachi's is myself. Mine plays Gears of War and every other game I've tried perfectly.

Please don't get the wrong impression guys. You'll do just fine with a Hitachi and they are easier to flash. Hitachis don't suck. They did once when they weren't flashable and then at 1st they needed tricks to get back ups to boot. They are cool now. Samsungs are just a bit better.

Uh that's not just my opinion for the reasons I stated. Go over to Xbox-scene and you will see that is general consensus. If you talk to Garyopa and the other guys who make the firmware we all are fortunate enough to use they will tell you the same thing. They aren't hard to find and talk to on Xbox-scene or maxconsole. Shouldn't the people making the firmware know drive is better? Again it's not like it's miles better. It just a bit better which I would think should be quite obvious for obvious reasons.

It's easier for the hackers to create firmware for the Samsung. I've been on X-box scene for like 3 years now. I "know" the Samsung is the perferred drive but for the sake of the total newbies on THIS site.. ya know the ones who know nothing of DOS... A Samsung drive might not be what they need. I prefer the Hitachi drive, you prefer the Samsung. I personally don't give a damn which one everyone else perfers as long as it works.

Look I already I said the Hitachi is easier to flash. Also I don't give a damn what drive you or anyone else uses. I stated clear facts and not just what I prefer or what works for me. You can try to spin it anyway you want. Hitachis are doing fine. However, you seem a little too sensitive about your own drive. I have a Samsung, but it doesn't matter that much to me. If I had a Hitachi I certainly wouldn't feel the the need to swap it out for a Samsung. And honestly, if someone couldn't figure out DOS enough to flash, maybe they should leave flashing either drive to someone more capable.

First of all hello everyone
I recently bought an xbox 360 with an hitachi drive version 059
i have read loads of threads about firmware and backing up games but im confused as there is a lot to take in.
I have flashed my drive with the commondor eva flash but does this work as i am yet to copy a game as hotswapping for some reason never works for me.
So please can one of you guys tell me if my flash that i have used works or do you reccomend a different flah utility.
And can anyone inform how to make 1 to 1 copy's of games without hotswapping as it is annoying to keep taking my pc apart.

It's cool, were both strong willed level headed adults who want our points heard. That works as long as you are mature about it. I'm sure most folks here know there are way too many immature people online. BTW, My wife and her sisters started their black friday shopping at midnight this morning. For me, I can't deal with all that craziness. I brought my 360 to my wife sister's house and her husband, my nephew, his friend and I played my Xbox 360 a good portion of the day today and last night.

umm, does the quality of teh burner really matter if I just use good disks? ie, would there be any disadvantage in burning a game on a verbatim with a hival burner as opposed to a sony burner?
