i have the bulky silver ps2 and want everything possible out of it and was wondering what stuff would be best to use (e.g swap magic + fliptop for booting backups, independance exploit for features etc )just everything ill need to fully mod my ps2

a mod chip is always your best choice. And only a quality one like a Matrix Infinity, Crystal Chip or DMS4 Pro SE

Swap Magic is ok but has it's flaws. But a lot of people use that and a flip top because it is the cheapest way to mod your system.

If you have good soldering skills then you could probably install the chip. I do not really recommend it though as it is very detailed work especially for someone who has never done it or lacks top notch soldering skills.
