Non-backup games in a modded PS2

I just brought a second PS2 (slim model) off a friend and it came with a Modbo chip pre-installed. However I brought it for the built in network port and accessories that came with it, not to play backup games.
I've heard a lot of bad stuff about the lasers in modded PS2s being pretty bad, so I just wanted to check with you guys if I'm putting my original PS2 games in any danger by playing them in the modded PS2. Am I better off just burning copies of my games to play them on it? I've got all the hardware and it sounds pretty easy.

there are only a few models that had laser problems and needed a laser fix with a modchip.
Playing your originals should be fine.
only real reason to make a back up is so that you can play it and save the original from being damaged. Which is alway a good thing.
