Cannot import DVD into Studio 10+

My daughter converted my old VHS tapes to DVDs on her TV/DVD/VCR combo set. They will play with Nero Showtime and on my DVD player attached to my TV, but they won't with Windows Media Player 11. Most importantly Studio 10 freezes when I try to import them into a new project. Is there a way to convert them so that they are more friendly with other programs?
