A couple years ago, I got my PS2 modded. When I got it back I didn't get any directions on how to use it. Just recently I decided to give it another go. On the modchip itself, it has "12c508/p" on it. After Google-ing around a bit, I learned that 12c508/p is a PS1 modchip. So is this true? If not how can I use it for my PS2 backups?
um. no not really possible. 12c508/p is probably a blank chip number. if u can take a picture, that would help on defining the chip so u could figure where to loom for that info.
12c508/p is a EEPROM and can be programmed to several bios configurations for use on numerous consoles. if it's programmed for PS1 use it'll only have 6-9 wires for a PS2 onward of 20
the PS1 stealth chips are currently in production by the millions, they have other uses as a EEPROM besides a playstation, nothing old about them. they are used in all sorts of electronic devices they just happened to work great for PSX PS1 and early PS2 BIOS authentication chips. a pic of one is included below.

Not exactly, they were used in early early early PS2 chips for synchronization between the console authentication signal and the modchips bypass but they were to bulky and didn't fit well between the MOBO shield and were quickly discontinued for the 16 pin flat-pack.
if what the original poster has is just the single chip with wires soldered to the legs of it, it was intended for use in a PSX/PS1 console, if it's attached to a PCB and has an additional 28 pin flat-pack then it's an 'OLD' PS2 chip but about useless for playing backups of most games MFG'd after late 90s
