found this.....................
Houston, we have a problem.
Before we take a look at our Xbox 360?s journey to the repair center in Texas, first we must take note of why a system would have to be sent there in the first place. Flashing red lights on the Xbox 360?s normally green ring of light is a bad sign, no matter how you cut the cake, but all red lights don?t mean a visit down south is necessary. Some issues can be resolved from the comfort of one?s own home. The Xbox 360?s ring is divided into four separate quadrants. Each division turning red indicates a separate problem, all with a different way of resolving the issue. It should be noted that when gamers call the support line about their defective unit, the standard procedure of operation is to have gamers unplug all cables from the unit, reinsert them, and try booting the system again. The support worker will also have players remove their hard drive and reboot the system to check and see if that is the problem. In the hope of speeding the process along, it might be a wise thought to run through those procedures before calling the Xbox 360 support line.
As mentioned, each quadrant on the set of flashing red lights indicates a different issue. If all of the lights but the first section are flashing, this means a general hardware failure has occurred. There is little to be done other than trying to unhook and reattach your cables. This problem is a sure sign a visit to the repair center is in your console?s future. If the problem is indicated in the second quadrant of the system, it is merely overheating. As too many hours of GRAW will do that to a unit, the proposed cure here is to unplug the unit from the power supply, let it sit to cool down, and perhaps begin scouting for a better location to store your precious investment.
A problem indicated in the third quadrant of the Xbox 360 ring of light is diagnosed as a hardware failure. Once again, try re-inserting all of your cords and cables, but this problem should definitely be dealt with by the repair center. If all four lights are flashing on the front of your console, this is perhaps the easiest problem to fix. This is an issue with the AV cable not being properly inserted into the back of the console. The cure? Just make sure the cord ?clicks? once it has been inserted into the unit. If that doesn?t work, of course call the repair center, but the four lights are the easiest of the problems to rectify.

Xbox 360: Three red lights flash on the Ring of Light
View products that this article applies to.
Article ID : 907534
Last Review : November 21, 2006
Revision : 3.13
SYMPTOMS
You see three lights on the Ring of Light (RoL) flash red on the front of the Xbox 360 console. The upper-right quadrant light is the only light that does not flash red.
CAUSE
This behavior occurs when the Xbox 360 console experiences a hardware failure.
THINGS TO TRY
1. Follow these steps:a. Turn the console off.
b. Unplug all the power and AV cables from the console.
c. Unplug the power cord from the wall socket.
d. Firmly reconnect all the cables. Make sure that the Power Supply Unit is directly connected to the wall socket.
e. Turn on the console.
If these steps do not resolve the issue, go to step 2.
2. Examine the lights on the power supply. When you turn on the console, the power supply light should illuminate green even if the three lights on the RoL flash red. If the power supply unit light is not green, follow the steps that are listed in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base articles:
906101 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906101/) Xbox 360: The power supply light is red
906102 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906102/) Xbox 360: The power supply light is orange
906103 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906103/) Xbox 360: The power supply light is not illuminated
3. If you continue to experience this behavior, contact Xbox Customer Support.
Note If the Customer Support agent cannot help you resolve this issue, return the console to Microsoft for repair. See the More Information section for Customer Support contact information.

found this article..try it
Helllo all, like many other unfortunate individuals who fell victim to the 3 redlights of terror I decided to do some deduction problem solving. My system flashed the 3 redlights while playing "Call of Duty" and refused to turn on for days afterwards. i did everything M.$ suggested (dissconnect everything and reconnect). It wasn't until I realized that maybe it's the source of power that is the problem (Follow me). If you are plugging your Xbox360 into a cheap surge protector or general plug strip you might want to plug your xbox into a very good quality protecctor or plug it in the wall. I plugged mine into the wall and VOILA it works flawlessy......plug it back into the power strip and it works for about 10 minutes...plug it back into the wall and VOILA it works perfect again. It's been running solid for 14 hours straight and no problems have occured in the past few days since it's been plugged into the wall
I think the power brick is overly sensitive to Good CLEAN power. A cheap protector or plug strip might not be providing the proper flow of power to the unit. Anyway, when I plug it into the strip, the xbox will start to do the 3 redlights (except the upper right one) which indicates a hardware failure. I'm troubled to think that the many people who returned their unit, only to get a new one that does the same thing, when the real problem is where they are plugging in their unit./ ANYWAY, it works for me...hope it works for you. provide feedback and let us know.

ok...i had the same problems as anyone else....3 red lights flashing, games freezing...this has been happening all week..ok, so ive been reading up on this issue and read about wrapping a towel around the xbox 360 and letting it warm up for a little while...SO, I go home during lunch and wrap the towel around the 360 for about 15 minutes while its running with the 3 red lights. THIS ACTUALLY WORKED...the first time when i removed the towel, i turned it on, everything was ok, and then during my Madden 07 game it froze...so I decided to try and play it with the towel still on and I actually played 2 full games with my boy during lunch. I believe its a sodering problem inside, so the heat from the towel wrapped around it actually keeps whatevers loose connected. Guess I'll be playing the 360 with a dumb ass towel wrapped around it

I had this problem with my 360. What i did was dismantle the xbox then removed both heatsinks from the chips. i cleaned all the thermal paste from both surfaces then reapplied the paste. reassembled the machine. It didn't work at first but i left it on for about 15 mins then turned it off then on again and hey presto, it worked. Been working for about 3 weeks with no problem. here's the link to fixing 3 red lights
