i have an arescom net dsl 800 modem from qwest and i have read some places that i cant just run a switch or a router to set up a network and i was just wondering what i have to do to set up a network using it. thanks

See if you can test this with a router, but all you should need to do is connect it to a router, and go into your router's settings page and set it up for PPPOE connection. Then set your DSL user name and password in the router and connect your computers to it, if you get one that also acts as a network hub this should give you internet access and networking capabilities on all computers connected to the router. Note, that before you do this you may want to clear/reset the memory in the modem, and make sure you know your user name and password. An example of what I'm talking about is for a verizon dsl account your user name would be <user name>@verizon.net. The @<isp.com/.net/.org> is often necissary, so contact your ISP to be sure if it's required or not.
