Hi, due to recent difficulties formatting a new drive with xboxhdm1.9 -> http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/421418#2564642, I was wondering is there an alternative way to go about this? All the tutorials I've found make use of the xboxhdm which I can't get to run on my machine at home without errors. I've hit a brick wall here so would really appreciate if anyone could point out an alternative route for doing this.

thanks

You could install it into a modded xbox and format it with Slayers! Then just use the locking procedure in xboxhdm!

hi Chunkhead, good to hear from ya! Yeah I read an article or 2 mentioning that but maybe I misunderstood, but do you not need a chipped xbox to boot off Slayers disk? I've only got the softmods on each box, is that sufficient?

cheers

You can boot from a slayers disc with a softmodded system, but it won't be able to read the hard disk drive. I've heard of people sort of 'hot swapping' them, and using configmagic to lock the drive to their new system, but you'd probably have to use xboxhdm to format it to FatX first. I could be wrong on that, but this is what my personal knowledge is.

Yeah, you'll need a hardmodded xbox! Have you tried a different PC for xboxhdm?

can't get my hands on a decent one that will allow easy swapping of IDE cables (read DELL!!!!) I'm afraid. Update on the chipped box though. Turns out a guy in work has one so I'm trying to hassle a lend of it out of him. From what I've read on Slayers Disk I'd just do the following right?
Burn Slayers Disk, drop the new drive in the chipped box and boot off the disk, Select Option 3A) New Install on v1.x Large HD - *C* 5960 (I think this would be the option to use from reading the manual) and that should do the job for me.
Now as I don't want to lock the drive to this box, would I simply take it out when the build is finished in it's unlocked state and then lock it with my original eeprom using xboxhdm through my pc(that option works funnily enough) or something simliar and then drop it back in the softmodded box?

As usual thanks for any replies mate ;)

sorry Handsom, just saw your reply there. Problem with xboxhdm is precisely that, can't format the fatx partitions so that's why I'm thinking of formatting using Slayers. Would this not be achieving the same thing though?
That is by choosing the format option in slayer it will format and install dashboards etc onto the drive. Then by leaving the drive in an unlocked state I could use xboxhdm to lock with my original key.

Maybe I'm missing something here, would this not be ok?
