First of all I'm new to this, but from what I am reading it sounds like there is a HDD in the PS2, is this true? I've been thru searches but the information is so scattered. One more question...is it possible to play sega genesis games on the PS2 without doing a hardware modification? If it's just software stuff, what is it I need to do?

No there is no HDD in the ps2.
You have to buy a compatible hdd and an ps2 network adaptor.

And yip you can play genesis games on ps2 without any hardware modification. You just need a way to play back up cd's.

I have an external HDD, can I just plug it in the USB port on the PS2? I mean, what hard drives are compatible? Swag Magic sounds easy enough to get.

For an external I dont know whats compatible. But I think most are. But u need usbadvance/usb extreme to use it. Or jus get swap magic and download it etc.
For internal go here... http://ps2drives.x-pec.com/?p=list and check if you model is compatible. But u need a network adaptor to plug the hdd into your ps2.
