Hello,

Before I explain my problem, I'd like to say that posting this is a last resort, as I've read a myriad of guides on these forums and others explaining the procedure of creating PS2 backups, so I'm somewhat knowledgeable (i think..).

I recently got a mod chip installed, and have been attempting to back up my games, but with no avail. The problem which occurs is this: The PS2 splash screen appears, as well as the custom splash screen of the chip which I got installed. Then, the screen turns black and hangs for several minutes (what seems like an eternity). Then, if I'm lucky, the machine will recognise the game, but it will load super-duper slow, like a loading screen would linger for 5-10 minutes. Then the game stutters throughout, in-game movies get stuck in 5-minute long half-a-second loops, and other sluggish behaviour. Before saying "its the media" please read on...

I have read on this site that this could be due to bad media. I am using Verbatim DVD-R 16X, which I've read is a trustable brand.

I have attempted to use Nero Express, Nero Burning Rom and DVD Decrypter in the image-creating/iso burning procedure, all of them yield the same result. I have also attempted the burn with a couple other brands, including SKC. I'm surprised it doesn't work with Verbatim. The mod chip isn't faulty, it was demoed to me when I got it installed.

My burner identifies itself as ATAPI DVD DUAL 4Xmax.

The machine DOES recognise the backups, just extremely sluggishly. For some reason, I am doubtful that the problem lies in the media (though I could be wrong), because of the extreme similarity between how the backup operates with the different brands I've tried (loading times, loading patterns, etc). Could this then be a problem in the writing process?

I am really lost for ideas here. Some help would be appreciated.

Please, if it turns out I've missed some crucial piece of information or something, don't flame me, I'm still relatively new to this whole backup thang.

cheers,
art

Oh, and another thing which I find strange, which could be relevant: for some reason, the reading speed stays at an average of 2x and the writing speed at an average of 1.7x, even though I set them to higher.

EDIT: OK, after some more research, i discovered that my burner's firmware hasn't been updated since 2001. Its full description is as follows: "MICROSTAR DR4-A (MSI MS-8404A, ATAPI DVD DUAL 4XMax) (aka OPTORITE DD0201)". There is some firmware available, however its some kind of a DOS-based thing, which I'm not familiar with at all. Is there any kind of user-friendly guides out there for installing firmware like this? Or is it at all necessary?

Ditch the 16x discs & get 8x discs. If your burner insists on writing at 1.7x then that's waaaaaay too slow for 16x discs.
That'll most likely help the situation for a start.
Also make sure you have the latest firmware for your burner, which you'll find at the burner manufacturer's website under support most likely.

Thanks for the reply! I'm trying all kinds of speeds, 16x, 8x, 4x, same result. And the burner writes/reads at the same measely speeds, whatever kind of media i use.

How can I find out the manufacturer's name? Ive tried every kind of system tool imaginable, like Nero infotool, and it only ever says ATAPI DVD DUAL 4xmax.

Thank you for your help, but I have just figured it out somehow!

It was all in the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers! These settings (in Control Panel--->System--->Device Manager) are usually set to "DMA if available", but for some reason my secondary controller had reverted to PIO. Apparently if these settings are turned to PIO, it results in some sluggish burning.

This really should be made publicly known, I don't want anyone going through as much frustration as I did!

Anyway, thank you for your help, I've just backed up two perfectly working games. I just wish I hadn't made seven Verbatim discs into coasters in the process of this :P
