Okay folks--I am new to DVD backups, but I need some serious help. First and foremost, I searched this forum and didn't find too much info on buying disks in the US, so I am posting a new article, hope I don't offend anyone.
My situation is this: I have just purchased a new Pioneer A05 drive (which is waiting at my house as we speak, in the box, ready to be installed). I have DVD decrypter, DVD2One, and a bunch of other freeware to use. This is besides the point.
I have read that Ritek is pretty much the brand of choice, and I am happy to pay $1.25-$1.75 per disk. That isn't the issue...I just want them to work.
My issue is this: I see a bunch of people saying to buy the Ritek media, but to ONLY buy the branded ones...that is, media with the Ritek logo on them. Problem is, all the websites I have visited don't have pictures for me to verify this. Finally, I also see that there are Ritek G03s and G04s, but there are also Ritek Ridata G03s and G04s. Can someone explain the difference, and tell me who to look to and who to avoid, as well as where to buy them and how not to get some crappy grade B stuff?
I would be so thankful, as I am an anxious new user...

When we say branded it doesnt mean branded by Ritek. Ritek produce the discs for other companies. I have had great results with unbranded Ritek as well as excellent results with Clone Disc Ritek. It is hard to tell a grade B disc without looking. Check with Ritek what the official retailers of Ritek are in the states, Mr Yang may be able to tell us, and buy from them, that way they are guaranteed.
Check this website for updates on quality of Ritek and other media. Also, there are user guides available for some of the programs you may or may not have.

Allmediaoutlet.com sells the Riteks with the logo. That is the only one I have purchased so far and they are 1x for the pioneer 105 and 2x for the sony dru 500AX. They cost 1.40 for 25. Not bad. They work. Strangely the unbranded Ritek 1X are more expensive. Go figger.
Logo is a bit of a misnomer as it doesn't really say Ritek on them. You can check it's authencity with any program that does so. DVDinfo is the one I use. It'll say Ritek Go3 for the 1X Riteks w/logo.
I should add that although they work, they may not work in older DVD standalones. I noticed that some of the Ritek w/logos worked with an ancient Sony player and then the ones I backuped later didn't work. They do work with a newer player though.

Ritek g04 branded or unbranded will work good with a05, they are the media to buy, the ritek 03 will only work at x2 speed on the pioneer a05 with an updated firmware, so u will only get x1 burning from them..
Just stick to ritek g04,(burn at x4!!!) if u can get them branded all the better, and if there unbranded buy a 25 spindle and check them out urself for quality. (they should be fine) if not return them :)
Regarding the compatibilty with standalones, there is no dvdr/writer/burning software available that can give u 100% compatibilty, using as described (dvd decrypter,DVD2One, and last update of Nero burning rom) u should be able to be compatible with 75-85% of stnadalones
Can't recommend any usa sites since i am in europe.. Good luck :)

I'm also new and hav ea A05(but the computer tels me it's 105 meh)
I used Optodisc 1X for copy dvd's (backups) and retik 4X G04 for my Avid vidoes i edited. You can tell that the dye is alot more darker in the Retik and it burns alot fast. 1X takes about 55mins. But so far all Optodisc 1X burn perfectly and play back was awesome, I only used DVD Shrink so far, I have everyother program, CloneDVD would let me copy, i didn't really mess around with it. I also have DVD Xpress Copy, hear that was a god program.
I'm from canada, i get my Optodisc 1X for about 1.75 CAD and my Retik for about 2.9CAD. my main comcern is dvd roit, i don't want to end up with crap in 6 months. Another good program to tell blank dvd info is DVDinfo or something like that. Tells the speed and brand and some numbers.

I have a Pioneer A05 as well and I use Ritek G03 when burning on my PC because of people saying how good Ritek is. All my burns have been 100% successful (200 DVDs) so far. I have used other brands in the past such as Princo and had trouble with some bad disks here and there. To check the media, I use DVD Decryptor.
