Well in Half-Life 2, there is a neat little mod called Garys Mod, also known as Gmod. It's recommened for download by steam.
Gmod is basically a game itself were you can delete everything, and make a whole map while playing, you use guns and paint objects, and you can place objects, and save the map, and then play it.

Also, Half-Life 2 itself is really great good story.
You need Counter-Strike SOURCE, and a few other things to run Gmod.

I don't know why, but it just says it on the website.
You need to have these specs to run Half-Life 2, because you play Gmod in Half-Life 2.

minimum spec would be a 1.2GHz powered PC with 256MB RAM, Win 98/ME/2000/XP and a DirectX 7 compatible graphics card.

But for those who want to see the game running in all its glory, be prepared to spec up to around a 2.4 GHz machine, with 512MB RAM, Windows 2000/XP and a DirectX 9 capable graphics card.

EDIT: Here is the link so you can download GMod http://gmod.garry.tv/download.php

I haven't tried it myself, but my friend has, and he said that it has all the game sprites inside.
EDIT: And there is rivers and all that stuff inside...

My friend says you just need to play around with it for a while, then you'll soon be able to do more advanced things in Gary's Mod.
