So I just bought an already-modded slim PS2, so I basically know nothing about it.
I got PS2 games to burn and run fine on the first disc, but I've burned 3 PS1 games to CD-Rs, and when I try to load them the PS2 browser simply says "There is no data."
To get PS2 games to work I have to reset the system while the game is in the drive, any ideas why PS1 games aren't working?
I've tried using Alcohol, CloneCD, and DVDDecryptor to burn, at slowest possible speeds, and used what I think is the appropriate settings (Playstation, blah blah)
a lot of modchips require you to put the ps2 in psx mode, for example,on mine,i put the ps2 in standby mode (red light),then press eject, and keep hold of the button for a couple of seconds, then insert game

if your not sure which chip you have, just mess about with the different suggestions which can be found here
for those old chips that have multiple boot methods a disc of the wrong boot type as Hursty mentioned would give a RSOD, the "There is no data." is caused by the PSX sync wire being loose or attached to the wrong connection.
the PSX sync wire is one of the easiest wires in the entire mod and anyone with even moderate soldering skills can tackle the task of repairing it. just search around the net for an installation diagram of your chip/console version configuration.
