Hi i just bought a used ps2 with a mod chip, dont know which, but i can load the original disc, but when i use a backup disc DVD-R it says disc error. I can boot ps1 backup cd's
is there some kind of software to boot which can detect the boot chip or is there a way to get the ps2 to read the backup disc, can read it in a normal dvd drive.
With some chips, when you load up a game, when the 'playstation 2' screen appears it says the name of the chip below it, if it doesnt then you will have to open it up.
If you have any cd based ps2 games such as the sims or one of the games listed on the pinned topic in the cd backup section you can try making a backup if it doesn't work then Pspness is right you may have a PS1 modchip.
Hi Im using verbatim DVD-R certified for 8x, cant play dvd movies either, have som homemade dvds which plays in my philips DVDR they comes also up with disc error.
I think now its either dirt or alignment of the laser because if i use my dvd burner to burn ps1 games they also come up with disc error, but do i burn them with a old ibm t30 with a combo drive they run fine.
Knowing which mod chip you have is very important, some of them have different boot modes for PS1 and PS2 games.
The media you use sounds fine, as long as you are burning them at 4X
A few things you may want to try:
1. updating your burners firmware
2. cleaning the laser with alcohol and a cotton swab (carefully!)
3. if it is an old fat style PS2 adjusting the laser is also pretty easy but you have to take your time and do it one notch at a time, then put it back together and test it and repeate the process until it reads the discs. Usually if the laser is not correct you would also have problems with original games so if those play well then i would say it is the way you are making the back ups or your burner that is the problem.

Done that, running latest firmware on my lite-on 1633s

if its about the burner, should not be nescessary cause discs are readable in all other kind of drives

i guess now after trying to adjust the laser, last night, can only run cdr games and orig dvd games and ONE dvd movie, made with the same burner as all other movies i have.
