not bad, so now we need burning software that will backup our HD/Blu-Ray dvds. right now the cost comparison of buying the burner and the blank dvds is far from worth doing

How much are disks? Is it known if we're going to be able to burn a Blu-ray movie as easy as it is to burn a regular DVD movie? For some reason I just think that Blu-ray will be impossible to copy, makes me think of DVD Audio disks.

There really does not seem to be any point in buying a Blu-ray burner right now, at least not for all but a tiny few people. You can't back up your movies with any of the stuff that's out there. They are not economically feasible replacements as a DVD-ROM data disc, as the discs are $20 versus 20 cents for a DVD. About the only conceivable use for them is if you create your own content in hi-def, and want to put it out in BR format, then maybe it's an option, but the cost is still a major sticking point.
-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

The big selling point of Blu-ray to the MPAA was that it had a strong copy protection. You won't even be able to record HDTV programs onto Blu-ray much less movies as soon as they flick that switch which enables HDCP on HDTV signals. When your recorder sees that HDCP, it'll block you from copying. Blu-ray will just useful for storing data files.
