To be able to read a dual layer DVD. The drive has to be a dual layer drive. What drive are you using??

The only thing that comes to my mind and please not its 12:10am Aussie time :)

Try updating your firmware of the drive.

Here are the 2 websites you can upgrade your DVD drives firmware.

Dangerous Brothers
http://tdb.rpc1.org/

or

The Firmware Page
http://forum.rpc1.org/portal.php

I hope that helps.

How long have you had the drive for?? Lite-ON drives are normally good. Other good drives are Plextor, BenQ's and my recommendation which is pioneer.

If its old maybe the burning laser is gone...

If it's not READING DVD-9 or DL discs, the drive is likely toast or your media is bad. A firmware update or a lens cleaner might help, perhaps even uninstalling, rebooting, then reinstalling, but your drive's specs suggest it should read DVD-9's and DLs just fine. It is a modern drive that is still being sold. Try readign a clean, store-bought movie DVD.

-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

Those drives you have listed should work fine. It must be a setting when you installed it. Can we have a log of what your DMA settings are?? and a basic question that comes to mind have you put one drive setting to master and the other to slave. Also does your bios see both drives??

No worries :) Glad it all worked out in the end. When I was reading your issue i just thought that it may have been that. Sometimes the basics are the things we miss. Also remember the Master and slave issue also deal with multiple hard drives in the one computer unless you have an external :)

Glad to be of service and keep me posted. :)
