I have a modchip on my PS2 that can't play NTSC-J imports, so I'm trying to burn a copy of the import that I bought. How can I remove the region encoding on the import? Will removing the region encoding matter? If I use DVD Decrypter to rip the game onto my HD, does that remove the encoding? I checked the FAQs, and I couldn't find anything on them unless I've gone blind. Sorry if I'm not clear enough, everybody's a noob sometime. Thanks.

what chip do you have? the first modchips to come out didn't play backups, they simply played imported discs so that's sort of the basics of the chip to start with.

I can't tell which modchip it was; the PS2 is my brother's and he doesn't remember what kind of modchip it is. It can play backups for sure, but I tried my imported game and it didn't work.

I believe it is the Magic 3 or 3.1 modchip. I've had the PS2 for a couple years now, so it might not be that version, but I'm certain that it is a Magic modchip. I have a SCPH-30001 PS2. This is pretty much all the info I can give you, sorry if it doesn't help.

if it's a Magic chip it's direct boot of any original disc and you are just booting in the wrong mode. they do not boot backup DVD-9s but do all others. they also have three boot modes, tap reset from standby (PS2 mode) from standby hold reset till the blue eject lite comes on (PSX/DVD Movie mode as well as original PS2 DVD based games) from standby hold reset for 5 seconds (sleep mode, chip is off) you can't swap modes without going back to standby first. FWIW you have a V5-6 console
