I hope someone can help me, I have a Panasonic DMR E-30 DVD recorder. I bought it a few months ago. I did a lot of reseach on this board for what DVD-r's to buy. I decided to buy OPTODISC (blue top) 4.7GB. I bought them from precisioncddvd.com.
For some reason when I try to record, it records for about a minute then aborts and the recorder turns off or and I get some error message or 'recovering'. Am I doing something wrong? For some reason whatever recorded that minute wasn't 'saved' and I can try several times over to record. I am not sure what is going on. Before I started using these disks, a friend of mine wanted me to put some family videos on DVD. I said I'd do it for free if she just supplied the DVD-r's. She sent me SONY DVD-r's, and those worked fine. there was no problem.
I have heard good comments about RITEK, but now I am kind of wondering because I also heard good things about Optodisc (blue top).
Are Ritek really good, I mean better than name brands I know like Sony, TDK, Panasonic, etc... Please let me know. Any help would be very much appreciated.
Has anyone else had their DVD's turn off in the middle of recording? It even happened when I put it on a timer. :(

Thanks :)
Kelly

The Optodiscs are obviously not working for you. If you can send them back stating that they won't record and asking for your money back. The Riteks are very good and they work fine on Pioneer recorders and nearly all others but I wouldn't say they were better than Sony or TDK, but they are cheaper and good quality. MsKelly I have the same recorder and it does the same exact thing with a lot of different media. I have had the best luck with Optodisc blue tops, but I've heard there may be some bad discs out there. Memorex, TDK, Sony, Samsung and Ritek seem to work with my machine. These brands are on sale a lot and you should be able to find them at a reasonable cost. Avoid Khypermedia no matter what they cost. They are terrible. As for the Panasonic, I hate mine and can't wait to get rid of it. It shuts down and goes into recovery mode and gives error messages. Frequently it won't finalize the disc. I've had it replaced 3 times under warranty for these and other reasons. The quality is terrible. Panasonic tech support is awful and clueless. If your machine goes into recovery mode and won't eject the disc, make sure the machine is off (but not unplugged), push the stop button twice, and then push eject. The disc should eject then. Fortunately there are a lot of newer machines coming out from other manufacturers, so this one will be replaced soon.

I'm not an expert on this, but I read that not all DVD blanks are compatible with DVD recorders. They have to specifically say they can be use with a (non-PC) DVD recorder. You better check the Panasonic website before buying anymore blanks.
