Last night while I was asleep, my PS2 decided not to recognize my network adapter and/or my HDD (official one) for some reason. I play FFXI, and had just logged off and shutdown my system about 12:30am, meaning it WAS working perfectly fine. I tried to log on today around noon but my system wasn't recognizing the Adapter/HDD. The system wasn't dropped, there was no power outage or surge that I know of, the system just sat there for ~12hrs on standby-mode.
The odd part is that this isn't the first time this has happened to me. I swapped PS2 with my brother-in-law after my old system had this same problem only about 2 weeks ago. That system's problem was understandable though as it had fallen about 3 feet off the desktop it was sitting on, completely reseting the internal memory (clock, settings, etc.). This time nothing of the sort had happened. It just wasn't working. I took everything apart, saw no problems I could recognize, cleaned the dust off and put everything together again. Still not reading Adapter. The Adapter and HDD were the same in both systems, only the system changed (both SCPH-30001 models). So far everything is pointing to my Adapter, and I'm hoping it's the problem as it'll be the easiest to replace.
So I guess I have 3 questions, "Anyone else have this problem", "What might have happened to the PS2/HDD/Network Adapter?" and "Any suggestions as how to fix it?"
(Sorry for long OP, just wanted as much detail so problem can be understood.)
Hasty answer appreciated.

I kept searching some other sites and found this:

http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstat...=87762#M1333686

Problem sounds similar and makes sense with both situations I had problems in as well as yours. May be what's wrong. Currently dismantling system to locate fuse to see if it is indeed damaged. If so my brother-in-law could easily fix it or I can ship out to Sony for repair.

(PS: You dont happen to run a mall arcade do ya? Guy I know who does has the nickname goose)

Hi!

I read the post (link you posted) and makes sense. I have that im mind from the begining.

I open my PS2 but i had to stop because of the small screws (didnt have the right tool), so i didnt check the main board... But (im guessing) i dont think we can find a glass fuse there. i think maybe we find a fuse of this kind: ( http://www.mod-chip.com/en/ps2_fuses.php ) and you must test it to check if it works!

Now, 2 questions:

1 - Did your PS2 delay about 2 minutes before start to load a game? (mine does. after a 2 min +/- black screen it works fine, but when i try to use online on a game, it gives me the "You dont have a PS2 Ethernet Adaptor. No online avaible." )

2 - Did it works fine without the ethernet adaptor? (without the Ethernet Adaptorm mine works just fine).

Once again guessing, i dont think the problem its a fuse, because of the 2 minutes delay. I think if the fuse is damage, the PS2 should have the same behavior with or without the adaptor installed. But no, with it installed i have that 2 min delay. So, some information its beeing exchanged from the PS2 to the adaptor and vice-versa.

I will try to open again my PS2 tomorow, and if i find the fuse i will take a photo of its location and send you. If possible, and you find it, please do the same.

Good Luck

Jorge

PS: No mate, im from Portugal. This its an european goose =)

To be honest, I haven't been testing any discs since all I want is my HDD registering so I can play FFXI more (lol). But after I put a disc in I wasn't getting the same errors you were, BUT I do remember my PS2 taking a LOOOOOOONG time to load discs when the HDD was working right. They weren't anywhere near 2mins, but it does seem to bog down the system some. As to your questions about the network problems, if I knew what was wrong I probably wouldn't have made my own post =/ sorry bud. Mine works fine with or without the adaptor in, I just can't get it to recognize that there is an adaptor attached, which in turn means it doesn't recognize the HDD either. All other functions are 100% normal.
I'm still trying to locate a burnt-out/damaged fuse. If I find one, I'll have to tell ya where it's located as I don't have a digital camera at my dorms.

EDIT: Maybe your's is having some internal connection problem that only occurs if the system attempts to read the adaptor, but is bypassed if it doesn't need to. I.e. a problem in the adaptor is making the processor repeatedly attempt to work through it, causing your sluggish problems. When it's detached, the system never gets an error message and proceeds normallly.
I'm no computer wiz myself, so all I can think of is mostly speculation.

EDIT2: To be honest, it'd be nice if someone who might now our problem would post instead of us just going back and forth. You and me speculating kinda sounds like the blind leading the blind. Neither of us really knows what going on and are looking for answers not empathy.
