I am trying to Shrink an ISO file (which has already been decrypted) to fit onto a DVD5 with a lot of compression and shrink is indicating that it will take several hours. Can Nero Recode open ISO files to do this? I would like to speed up the process.

Have you checked to see that your drive(s) haven't slipped into PIO mode...they need to be in DMA. Here is a guide. It would also depend on your system specs... a slower processor could take as long as two hours if using Deep Analysis and AEC quality enhancements coupled with high compression.

Thanks for the reply. My drive has not switched into PIO. There was a lot of compression required and the time for Shrink actually picked up quite a bit after a few minutes and it went down to about an hour which wasn't too bad.

More importantly though, is there a way for Nero to open an iso file?

No need for that! Do you only use Shrink to compress then? I like to have at least 2 programs that do the same thing in case one acts up on me.

I normally use Recode exclusively, but had to uninstall it due to issues with my drives locking up.

But does anyone know if Recode can work with an ISO file?

hamillp,
You have to use the Nero Burning Rom to write an Iso file. I think Nero Recode only sees the VOB,bup, and ifo files.

If I was going to write and iso file then use Imgburn which is way better

I've looked through Recode and can't find a way to import an ISO...only VIDEO_TS folders. I guess the answer is no. I typically rip my movies using DVDFab Decrypter which produces a VIDEO_TS folder or I use Ripit4Me in File mode which produces a VIDEO_TS folder. If you want to use Recode in the future I would suggest one of the options above.

I had a feeling that was going to be the answer. I am not actually trying to write it, I am trying to shrink it. Shrink was taking too long so I wanted to see if Recode could do it but didn't see anyway to get it to read an ISO file.

Are there any advantages/disadvantages to burning a DVD from either a iso file or the video_ts files? Is one better to start from than the other? Thank you.

An ISO is an image file...it contains the same information that the VIDEO_TS folder does, it's just rolled all up into a neat little package. The preferred method is to produce a VIDEO_TS folder and work from it. As for burning, there are really no advantages/disadvantages other than perhap extra step if using Imgburn to build an ISO from a folder.

I used to be the same way, but it's just easier to use other programs with a folder to work from...compatability is increased somewhat.

Your right,I just thought of how much easier it is to use FixVTS when the video_ts file is already made.I'm going to change my ways, thank you.I think I'll be a better person.

If you have the full version of Nero installed just double click on the .iso file you want to burn an Nero burning rom will start automactically. Then select your drive then burn. That's it..
