i got a slimline ps2 bout 2 months ago. it came from singapore and the model is NTSC-j scph 70006. now i am begining to wonder which mod chip i am running.i have opened it up once till the part i found metal casing covering it from both sides. i was clueless to how to take it apart from that part on so i left it. there was no sign of any modchip till that part. cus anyone pls tell me a list of mod chips which are there for the version of ps2 i have. there is a sticker of a red sonic the hedgehog on top of one of the screw tabs and also i have to double tap the reset button twice to boot up psx games. can anyone pls help?

Could be a Messiah chip. I beleive those had to use the double tap to load PSX games method.
But unless you ask the place you got it from or open it up to the point where you could get at the chip on the motherboard there is no real way to tell.

see if the method listed here for turning off a Messiah chip works.

PS2 CD/CDr/DVD/DVD-r : Insert the disc and close tray. Hold reset to power off to standby mode. Let go of reset button. Tap reset button quickly, to start.

PSX CD/CDr and DVD movies: Insert the disc and hold reset for a few seconds to turn off the PS2 (standby). Turn the PS2 back on by holding reset until the blue light on the eject button lights up.

You should always turn the PS2 off (standby) for a few seconds before changing between modes (PSX, DVD, PS2 - copies and originals).

To turn the modchip off (to play PS1 games that may detect the modchip): Turn off the PS2 (go to standby) and hold reset for at least 5 full seconds. The next time you reset the PS2 the modchip will turn itself back on.

there are 2 guides there on how to take apart a PS2. One is for a V4-V11 and the other is for a V12-V14

thanks a lot for the reply Steimy. and am sorry on my part for not replying sooner. i actually lost where i had posted this thred.(so embarassing). anyways here goes

i have confirmed this - i have to first put the ps2 on standby and then hold the reset button for roughly 4 secs( my light is always green...is that a problem???). but this doesnt work for psx games. psx games have to be double tapped.


the method you posted to boot ps2 cd/cdr/dvd/dvd-r does work.


i havent been able to turn off the modchip so far....

those are the specs so far. so cud it be a messiah chip?? also, can i do some neat stuffs with this chip??

Some chips have real good features but they would be of the more expensive type.
To tell the truth unless the chip flashes up a screen with any sort of name when the PS2 loads, there is no real way to tell Exactly which chip you have other than looking at it and hoping you can get some useful info from it. that or try boot modes for every chip that it could be.

the problem is that there are so many chips, and clone chips out there that finding out what you have after the install is very hard.

thanks for all the help Steimy. i have a feeling i have one of those clones. the ps2 came premodded so i have no idea if i am running any one of the new mod chips. anyway, i will get down to topening it up and take it apart soon. yo thanks for the link in ur previous post. will let u know as soon as i have got it openned up and i will take pictures as well of the chip. hopefully u will b able to tell which version it is. c ya round man.
