Live Updates Mess Your Flash?

As of the moment I don't have my 360 flashed. I've just bought it and haven't even gotten xbox live on it yet. Just out of curiousity on my box that I got my system in it says free silver membership, I couldnt find any code or way of getting xbox live account started, is it that once I connect with my 360 that my account starts? Also same with my Arcade games ( it came with the bundle ) and it states on the outer cover that it includes 1 free month of gold membership. Any ideas?

Ok back to the main topic. Once on Live will it just auto update? Do I need to update to be able to play Live? Will it mess with the flash, after I've updated. Or how about flashing it after I've already updated? Sorry for all these questions I'm a total newb to the Xbox 360 hacking scene. I'll greatly appreciate any help/ info!

it depends on what type of drive you have, have a look at xbox scene all the info you need is there. you should be fine what any hitachi drive

So its all good for me to go ahead and update on xbox live and not worry about firmware hack on my drive? I'll still be able to play back ups, and play them online?
