hi:

I have tried backing up Kill Bill, Syriana and now The Da Vinci Code. It seems that I do not get the (i'll call them subtitles) copied. What I mean is when two people are speaking a language other than English in these movies amongst each other the movie has english subtitles just for those parts so you know what they are saying to each other.

So, I do not mean to have English subtitles for every speaking part in the movie. I have tried checking the English subtitle box in shrink on a re-author. Is there any software that I can use AND a standard way of doing this to EVERY movie I backup? I usually buy the dvd, backup the main movie and only watch the backup to keep my originals new. When I hear 2 people speaking in a foreign language for a few seconds and I don't know what they are saying to each other I figure there should be subtitles at this part. I put the original in the player and there they are. Any comments are welcome. Regards...

I've not backed those particular discs however they MAY be using a regular subtitle stream for just those subs that are translations. If that's the case then there may be a P-UOP preventing those subs from being turned off normally, but they're starting as off with your copies due to removing the P-UOP. Try going to the options for shrink and under the "output files" tab, uncheck Remove P-UOPs. See if that fixes your problem.

Even forever must come to an end....
I think.

hey magus:

thanks for the tip. I'll give that a try. That option has always been checked in my shrink preferences. I don't actually know what it does but will research it further in the shrink help files...regards...

I can actually tell you, it removes restrictions that prevent you from doing certain things (i.e. skipping the fbi warnings)

yes I just read the guide. I understand that option now. However, let me ask you this. What if I always check the English subtitle stream when doing a re-author? I always only backup the main movie for least amt. of compression.

I have tried that in the past with mixed results. What I am surprised at is that regular subtitles (not forced subtitles) NEVER appear even though the English subtitle box is checked. I guess that has something to do with not copying the menus when only ripping the main movie? Thanks..

Well, in answer to your question, having used some various dvd author programs I've seen a way to force only certain subs. What may be happening is that there are only certain subtitles within the english stream that have been forced and therefore when you remove the restrictions, it could be causing those to not force display. If you have an RW that would be the best way to check that, if not then you may want to set shrink to create an ISO from your disc, then mount and play the ISO on your computer.

This post is a bit confusing. Something you can play with while in Reauthor mode is 'Set Default Streams'. Right click on the Title and you'll see it.
