LG RC 185 dvd/vhs recorder region free unlock?

just bought an LG RC185 dvd/vhs recorder (uk version). really happy with it as it plays all types of discs and files including DivX and AVI. It can dub my old vhs tapes straight to dvd without any probs. the only problem i have is that it only plays region 2 discs. does anyone know how to unlock it to make it region free ?
after searching on google, i tried one method that was recommended elsewhere (using remote to go into set menu then pressing zero 7 times)this worked fine at first. however after 16 days it would not recognise any type of discs including bought pre recorded region 2. i have exchanged the dvd player now for a new one but do not want to enter this code again just in case it was the cause of the problems.

any thoughts or ideas gladly welcomed
