Is there a way to tell which xbox dvd drive you will get by just looking at the box it comes in? Like is there a pattern with the serial numbers or something?

You can't tell from looking at the outside, but if the manufacture date (visible through serial number hole in box) is after something like June 2006 you have a better chance of getting the currently unflashable drive (Hitachi 0078fk or something of the sort). I read somewhere that if you go to a poor area and hit up a store with low turnover for 360s you have a better chance of getting an older one, so I did that and got one made in April.
http://www.360drives.com is a user-contributed database that people can list where they got their drives, what firmware it had when they opened it, etc; if you click "how-to" it shows you the bit of info you can gather before and after opening your new 360.

360drives.com lists the team number and lot number which is ONLY on the outside packaging. The mfg. date is on the case which can be seen through a cut out in the packaging.
