i am having a problem of burning my backups to a disk now. i have not had any problems until about the last week. dont know if my burner has gone out or not. i have updated my firmware and still Nero kicks the disk out saying that it has failed to write to disc. i have burned something onto a CDr, and it worked fine. can anyone help me? this might even be the wrong forum, if so please transport to the right one. i have also copied my Nero log. i have the movies i want to burn already on my HD, just whenever i try to go through Nero, it compresses the movie down, and then when i go to the burn stage it kicks the disc out. i know the discs are good, they are Verbs, and like i said about a week ago, i was not having any problems.

Hi chayne04
Here's some suggestions:
Nero API version: 6.3.1.23
Update Nero to 6.6.0.18. Here's some links:
Packe 1
Pacage 2 (recode & vision)
May not be playing into the problem but Book Type request: DVD-ROM
Drive doesn't support changing Book Type for DVD-R
Change the booktype to automatic.
SCSI_TASTATUS_CHKCOND
Can mean that your drive isn't liking these Verbs.
So let's try another program to burn like ImgBurn. If you need to compress the files run them thru Recode and save to the image recorder. This will create an image file - .nrg that you can open and burn w/ ImgBurn.
Anything change pc wise since your were last able to burn? Keeping up on the pc maintenance bit?

Recorder: <ATAPI DVD DD 2X16X4X16> Version: G7Z9
You've got a rebadged Benq 1620. Benqs highly favor the plus format.
Your drive can be crossflashed to the actual benq 1620 and the firmware B7V9 or whatever the latest fw version is. That would be a last resort.
Burn process started at 4x (5,540 KB/s)
Verbatim 16x media is excellent quality media, but verbatim designed these discs to be burned faster.Benqs give more errors when burning them slow. Try to burn at least 8x if you can get that burner drive to recognize them or switch to the plus format.
You may have the possibility to booktype if you switch to the plus format. Qsuite may or may not work? Nero sets the booktype in both my Benq 1620s/via DVD Shrink.
i have not had any problems until about the last week
Is that using the same Verbatim -16x media? Or did you switch spindles or brand names? Sometimes a bad batch leaves the manufacturer-so try burning some that are towards the bottom of your spindle.
Another thing to try:
Sometimes a drive can get lost, acting like a cd-rw drive only:
Go into device manager under dvd/cd rom drives. Open up the tree, locate that burner, double click, click the drivers tab,uninstall/reboot. XP will hook it back up upon rebooting. Sometimes my 1620 will kick out and I have to uninstall drivers and re-boot to fix it.
Does it still play your other backups ok using Nero showtime, powerdvd,or windvd?

i sure appreciate the responses i got. thanks for that. will update to the Nero 6.6.0.18, thanks for those links. will change to booktype automatic. nothing has changed with the pc. will put a gig in after christmas. i have not had any problems burning with the -r. have burned over 600 dvds and never had a problem with the Verbs. the only time i would have a problem would be when i tried to use a cheapo disc. otherwise no problems with the Verbs. what do you mean when you say crossflashed? i have always burned at 4x without any problems. will try to burn at 8x. the burner does recognize the disc. yes, using the same spindle that i used last week. nothing whatsoever has changed. that is what i did i went all the way to the bottom of the spindle and it recognizes the disc, and when i hit the burn button in Nero, it just kicks the disc out. i am about to try to unistall and reinstall the driver. will respond after reboot. thanks all.

Not a problem chayne04
Since the drive is actually a BenQ you could used patched firmware to flash to the firmware of the BenQ 1620. The drive would then be recognized as a BenQ - using the write strategy from BenQ firmware.
Their firmware may have better support for most discs.
May help but as saugmon suggested last resort.
These also the possibility that you might have a few bad discs in that batch. Can happen even to the best manufacturers.
Keep us posted!

Update:
did everything you guys told me. still kicked disc out. found out that my drive was not reading disc. put in a CDr, read that disc. put in another DVDR disc that had a movie on it, read it. put in original disc, read it. put in a differnt blank DVD-R and it read it. i guess that disc was just bad. backed up my movie will try another. keeping my fingers crossed.

Good deal chayne04
That might have just been it (bad discs)
If it happens again try some Taiyo Yuden - you can get some good deals at supermediastore on them.

Some users of the Rebadged Benq 1620 have more trouble than the ligitimate Benq 1620. Different firmware versions. The G in your firmware means Retail. The B in my firmware means Bulk. I see a lot more issues with the Rebadged 1620,so a lot of people will crossflash them to the Bulk version for a better performance.
If you go that route later,cdfreaks.com is where to find that info. They know their stuff when it comes to crossflashing.
Good luck chayne04 and burn on!!

can crossflashing mess up the burner? is that why you all are saying doing it as a last resort? just curious because i am thinking about doing that if it means better performance.

With crossflashing, using hacked firmware, and regular fw updates:There is a risk-usually power interuption/bad flash/reboot/etc and a ruined drive. The crossflashing/ hacked fw will void your warranty.
And then there's the motto-If it ain't broke, don't fix it, LOL.
That's why I suggest it's a last resort,before replacement.
