I got a Crystal 2 Pro on order and I'm pretty excited about it. I guess this is a good chip, the only drawback is the lack of firmware. It comes with none at all.

Can anyone recommend the best firmware for this chip? I'd also like to know where to get the firmware. I've done some googling, and so far haven't came up with much.

You have made a wise choice. The CC2.0 is the top of the line chip right now.

Have a look here for just about everything you will need to know about the CC2.0

http://ccwiki.ps2-scene.org/index.php/Main_Page

And here is the link to download the most resent hacked version of the CC firmware/Boot manger (FW/BM). You will need to sign up there to download it I think.

If you need anymore help just ask.

I followed the links and found the official boot manager software, so I'm now wondering what advantages the hacked software offers?

With the official FW/BM you wont be able to boot back-ups. You will only be able to use homebrew apps. :)

Also, are the earlier Crystal chips running the same firmware as the new v2 Pro? I want to make sure I load the right firmware.

Yes they sure are. There are different versions that you dont need to worry yourself about. The hacked disc you burn will have them all on there and the chip will detect which on it needs to use. Just boot it up like any disc after the chip is installed. Then flash the FW and when that is done (1-2 seconds) install BM to the CC2.0's flash chip ... do this with out reseting the console .... its that easy!
