I happened to pick up a DualShock 2 at my friend's pon-shop to try to replace the one that came with my console, which is problematic(have to extend the wire to its limit before the PlayStation 2 picks it up). This "new" one has an even worse problem: the left analog stick. The problem: centering. The controller seems to be stuck at full right position even if the stick is centered. I can't get the console to recognize the analog stick as centered in the middle position. Is something broken inside the controller? And what's wrong with the one that came with the PlayStation 2 that I have to extend the wire to its limit before the console picks it up?

My console collection: Version 14A PlayStation 2(chipped), Version 7 PlayStation 2, PlayStation(both models), Wii, Gamecube, N64, Super NES(original from US and Japan and Mini), NES(front and top loader)Model 1 & 2 Genesis, Sega CD, Sega 32X, Atari 2600, Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast, Sega Master System(Model 1 and 2), Atari Flashback 1 & 2, FC Twin(2 in 1 NES/Super NES clone), GN Twin(2 in 1 NES/Genesis clone), Atari 7800, Intellivision II, TurboGrafx 16, GameBoy Color

The original one seems to have a wire problem. Ever trip over the cord and pull it out of the PS2 or anything like that? Seems like a loose wire. But I'm no expert, I just know a bit about wiring(stereos mainly) and that seems likely for your controller.

The one you bought thats stuck right... Maybe theres something stuck inside. Is the stick over to the side all the time? or is the PS2 reading it as turned right when centered?

If you bought it "new" and its messed up, and your old one is too... It could also be your PS2's controller port. Try the second port or a friends PS2 to see if it works properly.

If the new controller is broken, contact sony to get it replaced at least. But since you said "new" I'm guessing its a new used? So this won't apply.

Sorry if I'm little to no help.

Well, at least it explains what's wrong with the one that came with the PlayStation 2, and the problem with the one I picked up at the pon shop has the left analog stick centered, but the console picks it up as if it were always to the right. And I'm not sending it in to Sony, from what I've been hearing, Sony's customer service is garbage, but there's a technician I know who fixes broken consoles, DVD players, VHS players, and controllers, so I'll see what he can do. Sending the controller to Sony is my last option.

Tea Sony repair is a joke, they tried to fix my console 4 times and gave up and sent me a new Slim model. They also messed up my memory card in the process and had to replace that. So I wouldn't go there, if its defective as soon as you bought it, take it back to where you got it.
