if your psp isnt a TA-082 go ahead and downgrade. the chip is a undiluted platenum and makes the psp 100% brick proof.

Yeah as long as your PSP doesnt have a TA-082 motherboard, just upgrade to 2.71 and then downgrade.
Also even if your PSP is a TA-082, upgrade to firmware 2.71 anyway because you can run homebrew and ISOs on that firmware as well.

That downgrader will only work if you have an unpatched version of GTA.
Here is a better method of downgrading;
1. Download the 2.71 update from here:
http://www.psp-hacks.com/category/47
2. Make a folder called UPDATE in X:\PSP\GAME where X is the drive letter of your PSP.
3. Copy the update EBOOT.PBP you downloaded earlier to X:\PSP\GAME\UPDATE\
4. Now plug in your AC adapter and make sure you have a full battery. Then go to GAME-->Memory Stick and then run the 2.71 Update.
5. Once your PSP has finished updating, download HEND from here:
http://www.psp-hacks.com/file/922
6. Now extract hend.rar using WinRAR and then copy all the files inside the MS_ROOT folder to X:\ (where X is the drive letter of your PSP). Click on Yes if it asks you to replace.
7. Download the 2,71 downgrader from here:
http://www.psp-hacks.com/file/827
8. Extract updateflasher.rar and then copy all the files inside the MS_ROOT folder to X:\ (where X is the drive letter of your PSP). Click on Yes if it asks you to replace.
9. Now, download the firmware 1.5 EBOOT from here:
http://www.psp-hacks.com/category/43
10. Rename this EBOOT.PBP to UPDATE.PBP and copy it to X:\PSP\GAME\UPDATE (delete the previous 2.71 one that you put in there before first).
11. Now on your PSP go to PHOTO-->Memory Stick and select HEND
12. A blue screen will appear and your PSP will auto-reset, if it gets stuck just repeat Step 11 until you get it to auto-reset.
13. Now plug in your AC adapter, make sure you have a full battery and then go to GAME-->Memory Stick and select the Update Flasher.
14. Once its finished you will be on firmware 1.5!

1.5 is the best firmware. You will not brick your PSP as long as you dont have a TA-082 and follow the guide Eternalis gave you.

You can load all ISOs that can be loaded on 2.71 on firmware 1.5 as well. Firmware 1.5 is alot better IMO. Also if you have firmware 2.71 and a new DevHook comes out, you will have to wait until someone ports it to be able to get it running on your PSP.
So just follow the steps I posted. Your PSP wont brick if you follow all the instructions carefully and you have a full battery and the AC adapter plugged in.
