how do play playstation 2 games directly from external hardrive?

ok, ive read quite alot of the literature on how to play ps2 games directly from a external drive. i still havnt gotten a clear answer.

here is the question: how do i image the ps2 game cd onto my standard external hard drive so that when i connect it to my ps2 via a usb cable it plays? i.e is it different from imaging a regular dvd? and do i need any additional software to allow the game to play on my ps2 from the external harddrive. if i do need the software, do i install it from my computer to the external or is it from the ps2? whats the best imaging software to use? i have IMtoo DVD copy express.

if all this information is present somwhere in the forum please send me the link though id prefer if someone tells me straight.

oh reason for wanting to do this. i have problems with discs(keep scratching them) and i dont want to hard mod my ps2.
