I've seen other threads out there asking the same basic question I'm asking, but not quite identical and not for the same reasons, so I felt it appropriate to start a new thread, hopefully this is in the right forum. I have been using DVDShrink since I first got a DVD burner and have always been happy with the quality of what I get although sometimes a bit frustrated with the limitations. Here lately, however, I have run into more and more discs that shrink won't copy without a lot of coddling. I'm looking for a similar FREEWARE program that will re-encode dvds to fit onto a single layer disc. If it has to be a series of programs I'm ok with that (which is why I question whether it belongs in 1 click transcoding) but I do NOT want to pay for programs. Just a program or series of programs that will successfully copy a store bought dvd to a single DVD-5 without requiring huge amounts of HD space. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Well depending on what you mean huge amounts of hard drive space there's
RipIt4Me.
All free programs and uses Shrink too. Updated to handle the newer copy protections.
Rips to the hard drive 1st w/ decrypter so depending on the disc and if you do a full back up or not say 7 gig then when it runs it thru Shrink another 4.3 gig.
So roughly need 12 gig free.

In a way this kind of goes back to a thread I had started a while back regarding Buffy S2D6. One of the people who posted said quite simply Quote:

Without making any specific recommendations. My question would be to either him or any of you, are there any "newer, more updated" programs that would work? Again, even if it involves using multiple programs I'm willing to do that, but it must be freeware, as I do not have it in my budget to spend money on software that often, especially for as mundane a task as copying a dvd.

Well again magus7091 I'm going to say RipIt4Me (link above w/ guide and links to download programs)
It is updated regularly and one of the newer programs. The programs needed are RipIt4Me, Decrypter, FixVTS & Shrink - all free. RipIt4Me offers wizard mode or 1 click mode.
It basically makes the 'antiquated' programs like Decrypter and Shrink handle the new stuff.
The it's all in the sequence it performs on what needs to be done.
Check it out - it's really quite good.

Unfortunately the one disc that started me on this quest is still giving me problems. Have tried it using the above set of software, and other software as well. The one thing that ALMOST worked for me is using dvdfab decrypter to rip, then fixvts and VobBlanker running thru shrinkto5 then again using fixvts and VobBlanker (dunno if all the steps were required) and burning using Nero. Any further suggestions would definitely help. Thanks again.

Like ireland said, Read the guide. CloneDVD 2 is one of the Best DVD9 to DVD5 tools there is!
