I am new in here so please be patient. I hope this is the right forum, since the question might be specific to this software, or maybe not at all, not sure about it.
I have captured two 60 minutes mini-DV cassettes on my HDD from my DV-camera, using Studio 9.4, in full-quality DV format. I guess it's using the DV-2 codec (?).
I chose the lazy man's solution to quickly make a DVD, selecting the default settings for everything, and using the "best video quality" checkbox. It worked as advertized, and I got my video on DVD-R in about 60 minutes. However, the quality is very disappointing ! It is acceptable in the standard TV, but on a flat LCD screen it really is not good enough.
Watching the video directly from the mini-DV tape using the provided component cable is excellent on both TVs. I guess that the transcoding into MPG2 format is to blame. Or is it the best that home authoring tools can make ? I later tried the advanced options (re-encode the whole movie, constant bitrate...) with similar results but longer encoding times.
I am ready to use more complicated tools, in order to have better quality if possible. What do you gurus suggest ? Is my problem specific to the software I am using ? Should I try to encode the captured movie from the files on the HDD, or should I recapture everything with another program ?
