I don't think it is possible to "not" write anything to the HDD at all...you can copy on the fly with Nero, but there will be temp files that have to be written to your HDD and it is not a very reliable method for making backups. Why would you want to do it this way...are you out of space on your HDD?

Sorry to jump in, but...

What about if you have two DVD drives installed like I do? My HD is running a bit low on space tho...

you can copy on the fly using two drives, but most programs will copy the movie files to the hard drive.then burn..

i do it all the time..to copy a rip and burned dvd on the so called copy on the fly..and its better to copy to the hard drive first..

i tried it in Nero, easy creator and sonic.

theres no way around NOT writing a temp file to the HD first with a store bought dvd.

doing the movie on the fly with CloneDVD 2 and 2 drives will ONLY write a temp file to the HD after its burned to a disc the temp file will be deleted.

you can make a copy on the fly of the backup with a disc copier (Nero)without using HD space however

You will need an additional 4.4 gigs of space as well, because your rip = 8 gigs and your compression will require a separate file of 4.4 gigs and then you burn. Once you have successfully compressed your movie you can delete the original 8 gig file. Also you can rip the movie only and come out somewhere between 4-6 gigs in your initial rip and then an additional 4.4 gigs after the compression. And finally, if you are using AnyDVD you can let it run behind DVD Shrink and rip from the disc while encoding and end up with one file that is 4.4 gigs in size and no additional files should be written to your HDD.
