Put your copy of the DVD you made in your drive, goto My Computer and find your drive under "devices with removable storage", right click on the DVD drive and choose "explore". Locate the VIDEO_TS folder and right click on it, choose "copy", now goto your external dive and choose a location where you want the files put, right click in that location and choose "paste". The VIDEO_TS folder should be copied to the location you chose on your external drive.

Not sure why there would be a problem with that particular video title set (VTS) since you state the initial backup and burn went fine and you were able to view the movie perfectly (hopefully you're using good quality media to put your backups on, you could get copy errors when trying to copy from cheap media).
-You could try to copy/past each individual file in the VIDEO_TS folder on the DVD seperately to your external and see it that does it (create a VIDEO_TS folder on your external and copy the files there).
-You could try and re-rip the files from your copy to your external using DVD Shrink, when backing up, just choose hard "disk folder" and specify a location on your external to put the files.
-If you have Nero, you can also try the above suggestion using it's Recode application.
-You could try and re-rip the files from your copy to your external using DVDFab decrypter (free), you can get it here..

see if any of these suggestions work

I downloaded VLC and I was able to play the movie on my mac; but the quality of the video is not so good; why is that. the file is 4.4 GB just like on the DVD so why is the play back such poor quality.
Thanks again
