ok.. first of all, i have no idea what im doing with this ps2.. so i asked a question that u may think was dumb, which was is SM and slide card enough 2 PLAY burned games, just to make sure, because with all this stuff people r talking about with mod chips and programs and crap, i dont really feel like spending 30 bucks and then finding out i gotta buy some other thing and THEN i can play burned games.. second, just because my comp doesnt burn dvds, i think i can buy an external dvd burner. i wont bother asking a question since im bound 2 get bitched at by one of u, if u guys can figure this out then so can i

(To confirm, yes, Swap Magic and a slide card will allow you to play burned PS2 games. Additionally, a DVD burner is necessary if you want rip/copy/burn games.)
So you are posting essentially to tell us you will do your homework before you post a redundant question(s) again, good for you :)
Some of us may have a reputation for meeting simple questions with what looks like hostility or arrogance. It sometimes looks like we're reflexively rude to newbies and the ignorant. But this isn't really true.
What we are, unapologetically, is hostile to people who seem to be unwilling to think or to do their own homework before asking questions. People like that are time sinks ? they take without giving back, and they waste time we could have spent on another question more interesting and another person more worthy of an answer.
For most people, a computer is merely a tool, a means to an end; they have more important things to do and lives to live. We acknowledge that, and don't expect everyone to take an interest in the technical matters that fascinate us. Nevertheless, our style of answering questions is tuned for people who do take such an interest and are willing to be active participants in problem-solving. That's not going to change. Nor should it; if it did, we would become less effective at the things we do best.
We're (largely) volunteers. We take time out of busy lives to answer questions, and at times we're overwhelmed with them. So we filter ruthlessly. In particular, we throw away questions from people who appear to be losers in order to spend our question-answering time more efficiently, on winners.
If you find this attitude obnoxious, condescending, or arrogant, check your assumptions. We're not asking you to genuflect to us ? in fact, most of us would love nothing more than to deal with you as an equal and welcome you into our culture, if you put in the effort required to make that possible. But it's simply not efficient for us to try to help people who are not willing to help themselves. It's OK to be ignorant; it's not OK to play stupid.
So, while it isn't necessary to already be technically competent to get attention from us, it is necessary to demonstrate the kind of attitude that leads to competence ? alert, thoughtful, observant, willing to be an active partner in developing a solution.
If you decide to come to us for help, you don't want to be one of the losers. You don't want to seem like one, either. The best way to get a rapid and responsive answer is to ask it like a person with smarts, confidence, and clues who just happens to need help on one particular problem.

now that is one well written post, 2 thumbs up :)
Swap Magic and a slidecard is option #1 for playing back ups
if you have an older fat model.
option #2 they have for either the fat model or the slim model and
that is Swap Magic and an aftermarket flip top. Better option than a slide card by far.
Option #3 is if you have a slim PS2. Then you can get Swap Magic and a set of tools that goes by many names such as Slimtool, Magic Keys, Ghost Switch and so on. These will stop the PS2 from reseting when you open the original flip top it came with so you can swap discs.
Then there is option #4. For either model. And by far the best mod for your PS2 although also the most expensive. That is to send the
PS2 to a good site like Teammodders.com and have them install a quality mod chip. Such as a DMS4 Pro SE, Matrix Infinity, or Crystal Chip V1.1
this would cost about $30 in shipping ($15 each way), about $35 for an install, and between $35-$55 for the chip.
Each chip may have it's own special features. Like the Crystal Chip V1.1. can auto patch your back ups so you can use them online without patching them manually. And the DMS4 Pro chip has built in software to run a hard drive and also a built in cheat device so no need for extra cheat discs.
If you want the best you have to pay for it. And that is by far a mod chip. If you want to go cheap with a Swap Magic option then you just have to pay the price of a lack of features and some possible small annoyances like swapping, rebuilding some games, or even having to use a separate program like CD Loader to load some game Swap Magic has a problem with.

@ajammer
i sense a bit of sarcism in your post :)
a slide card may not be what you need, slide card mod is for the old fat ps2 only,so if you have the newer slim model, then you you need a different type of mod
btw,i agree with you that its not good for people to start bitching, but when you have a thread titled "wow",you are asking for trouble

and just to elaborate on the subject of
people being short fused with newbies a little.
there are a few very common things that just seem to set
some of the senior members off like a rocket. We mean well and really are here to help you but some things just set you off.
for me it is the following.
1. Titles with no meaning or link to what the heck your question may be about such as "wow" or "help" or use of 300 exclamation points like "help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
2. Posts that use letters rather than grammar. I am no English major but at least i write out my word instead of "y r u telling me dat"
I just can't stand it!
3. Post that do not provide any information. Like the following.
"my game won't work?"
Now that describes the problem for sure, but will get you no closer to an answer since anyone who wants to help is going to have to play 50 questions with you about how you burned it, on what type and speed media, what game it is, how your PS2 is modded and so on.
4. And people who refuse to help themselves even a little. Do you think that the people here get paid for this? NO. We volunteer our time to help others solve their problems. Any member asking how to back up a game should be instantly banned for stupidity, seeing that there is a big, bold thread at the top of the forum they posted in explaining how. Everyone always says "i searched and searched" but the fact is that had they ACTUALLY searched they would have found tons
of threads on their problem. I think the problem lies more in the fact that they do not yet know WHAT to search for. As far as modding terminology goes.

next time you get a response that you think is un-deserved,use the report an offensive post button,or pop onto ad_buddies,and i am sure any bad attitudes will be swiftly dealt with.

personally i would get a good internal burner if your
PC has an open IDE slot on it, which most will.
I have never messed with any external burners as i do
not think they work as well or as fast as an internal.
BenQ is a good brand (what i have now), so is Pioneer and NEC
Lite-On also make some decent burners
From what i have been told, stay away from Plextor
and Sony is alright and do a great job, but the last one i had only
lated about 2 years and then quite on me.
