I don't know if someone have posted this problem before, but I'm going to post it anyway. I have a PS2 1st Generation and the specs posted below:
PS2 SCPH350001
DMS4 Lite
250 GB Maxtor
HDL Advance 2.0
Problem: When I turned on my PS2, I get a solid red screen which doesn't get past nothing; not the red "Insert a PlayStation 2 disc" screen of death. The only way I can get past it if I reboot it 4x times, but it won't play any backup games
I've tried opening it up and seeing if there loose connection which I didn't see at all unless I overlooked something, but nothing came out of that.
Any ideas?

This is exactly one of the many issues that the DMS4 chips see time and time again. I have had more then a few DMS4's do this. I'm sorry to tell you my friend but your chips flash memory has crashed. I have heard a few success story's from people being able to revive there DMS4 by putting it in recovery mode and reflashing the chips bios. I however have not been able to do this with and DMS4's that have crashed on me. JUst remains at a solid red screen!
Might be time to upgrade to a CC or MI chip bud!
Good luck!

Well. Doesn't that beat all. Is the crashing on all DMS4 chips or on specific ones? Instead, is there a way to reset the bios on the mod chip?

The bugs with the DMS4's are very random and cant really be predicted. The bios that crashed is the chip man, so you will only be able to do what I said above if your lucky.

Sometimes when i save settings it crashes so i restart it and sometimes i have this red screen. You can push 3 times restart with 1 sec gap between them with the update disk in. i foret how to do it but it was really hard it took me alot of tries. and i think it was 4 times one to turn it on and then 3 times after that. Good luck

He should be able to enter recovery mode with the 3 tap method. Then should be able to insert the flash upgrade disc and boot it and reflash the chips bios.
I hope it goes well for you. Never has for me.

I've got you all. It took my PS2 7 times to enter recovery mode. lol. I'm serious -.-, but TV [my only one in the house] just crashed when the PS2 went recovery mode. Going to friend house whenever I get the time.

the RSOD simply means the BIOS flash is corrupted and is a very easy fix, you boot to backup mode by (with console in standy) tapping reset 3 times with one second pauses between each press (the pause is a necessity as two quick taps is a reset command for a DMS chip)then when you boot the flash disc do not press X to upgrade, press all 4 shoulder buttons to completely wipe the flash before programing. the DMS4 is a great chip in the hands of someone who knows how to use it :)

Yes when the DMS4 is not flawed (which a high percentage of them are) the DMS4 is a wonderful chip. He said nothing about BSOD. Maybe you meant RSOD, but this is not even an RSOD issue. Obviously you have not experienced the solid red screen he is trying to explain. Ones that have done more then a handful of DMS4 installs and many unfortunate end users know what a disappointment this issue is. Few have been able to get around this issue and I wish devildogd good luck with his.
But don't worry if you can bro you can always upgrade to a reliable chip like the CC or MI.

maybe you're dyslexic, i typed RSOD not BSOD and yes I've experienced a solid red screen(a corrupt BIOS) (what is refereed to as RSOD in DMS lingo, not a 'this is not a PS2 disc RSOD') and if the percentage of bad DMS chips is so high why is it I've installed close to a thousand of them and never had but one bad chip??? as mentioned previously in another thread, maybe it's your installation skills, the DMS chips aren't tolerant to halfassed installations.
you can try to push the Matrix and Crystal chips all you want by trying to slander the DMS but the DMS is still going to be the top selling chip because it's the best chip hands down regardless of what your opinion is.

I guess next time if I notice a flaw in your statement quoting you may be a better idea. Cuz I did double check your wording and you did in fact put BSOD. Since you claim to be such an expert I was thrown off by this. I since see you have gone back and edited that error of yours out. No matter though its all good :)
I have installed well over 1000 DMS (many more then that with other chips totals)ships all the way back to the DMs3 V1 days and they have all had issues unlike more quality chip like the CC and MI. So when you make statements like "maybe it's your installation skills" or "the DMS chips aren't tolerant to halfassed installations." I have to laugh at you ... and thank you for that I needed a good laugh with how busy I have been doing CC and Mi installs, it the time of year you know! My skills at soldering out preform even the best in the scene and has been proven on many occasion. But like I also said this is besides the point as even a pro installed cant get around the known and documented issues with the DMS4.
Dont get me wrong the DMS4 when working is a great chip, mostly because of of its software side (Toxic OS) which is a whole different department of the DMS team then the hardware people. But when I have seen such a high defect and failure rate with the DMS4 chips I (and many others) have chosen not to even stock them.
I'm not pushing anything, simply stating my experiences. If you are so insecure as to have these statements bother you so much then I'm sorry but maybe you should consider not coming to public forums where everyone is entitled to an opinion.
That being said, yes the CC and MI's are great chip with zero hardware bugs and considering one should not be left out of your decision making process just because someone has a thing for the DMS crew :)
Have fun!

Sure and while you were at it you also changed the BSOD to RSOD. Not that I really care I was just trying to help and this some how offended your insecurity's.
"now pull your head out of your ass." .... was that necessary. You can be vulgar and offensive when there are objections to your statements. Not something typical of a "senior" member.

obviously you do care, you made a comment about it and both it and your above accusation that i changed it are just flat out WRONG. but funny how you try to say i changed it 20 min before you posted and when you posted you tried to point out it was wrong, then came back to then say 'oh you went back and edited it' you can run in circles all day you're still wrong and you suffer from dyslexia and we'll let it go at that.

i refer to people as ignorant because ignorance is when they don't know any better because nobody has taken the time to teach them differently and seldom do i ever use the word stupid but you've got to be the stupidest person I've ever in my life came across.
let's fathom for a moment that i typo'd and fixed it, why would anyone then come back 20 min later and make a post about something that was corrected that long earlier??? they don't you my friend are the one who made the mistake and can't man up to the fact you f'd up. maybe you have a tiny monitor and have a hard time seeing the fonts on screen who knows but don't waste bandwidth blowing smoke, you make me wonder if you're a twin because in all honesty you're too stupid for one person.

You are the only one that understands your insecurity's. I cant make you realize that no one cares or understand your frustration with the silly logistics of your posts. You made a typo and no one really cares but you KC old boy. Maybe you have inhaled to much nitro this evening I dont know.
KC can you try to get back on topic. Maybe you need rest old boy.

again how stupid do you think the rest of the world is? do you think they are as equally stupid as you?
lets use just the slightest bit of logic here, i posted the original post at 1:53, it was edited at 1:54, which i say i added the simple little info that the pause is a necessity between the resets.
now in your little world you expect everyone to believe that in that 1 min of time, those 60 little seconds between the time i posted and the time i edited that you logged into this thread, noticed that error and took 20 min to make a comment on it?? let's get real, you logged in tonight and posted in this thread (where you are the dyslexic one who made the mistake) at 2:12, then in a different one at 2:18, another at 2:22 and yet another at 2:30 and 2:34......but you took 20 min to read and respond to something i typed and edited in less then a min??? get real.

Now now KC I find it amazing how anyone could look up to someone so arrogant. You have major insecurity issues with people you see as being better then you. Now this is truly one thing that "cant be fixed"
