DVD Shrink/Windows Media Player won't work

I'm pretty much stumped and I'm hoping for a new idea or two. When I open windows media player (ver. 10 or 11, happens with real player as well) everything is fine, but if I try to load a movie the system lags out immediately. With DVD Shrink the cpu almost completely freezes while trying to load the program. At the same time though, I can run complex screensavers, graphically demanding games, or many different tanks at once without any lag.

I've cleaned out the system (physically blowing out dust and defragging, skandisk, etc) and eventually wiped my hard drive and reinstalled. The processor is running cool (averages 40 degrees) and everything but Shrink and playing a movie works fine (and fast).

My system is-
P4 3.0 Ghz (800 FSB)
1 gig PC 3200 ram
nvidia 6600 GT
250 gig HD (11.5 gigs full)

Any ideas what else I can try/check?

I know this may sound silly but have you tried jumpering your drive to master/slave instead of CSEL/updating the firmware/using a different drive?

To specify, I'm referring to your dvd drive, note that if you rejumper that you'll have to rejumper your hard drive as well if it's on the same channel.
