If it's a US console you'll be fine. It it's PAL it may be 0078fk.

Basically it's a 50/50 chance you have one of almost impossible to flash 360s.

That's not exact since it just what people report, but it's the best guide we have. That 8.15.06 date right at the time 0078fk drives started in PAL 360s. Although, I didn't see one with that date on the site.

That'll only help if MS sent that replacement in its original box. The lot and team number isn't on the 360 case, just the mfg date.
Dumbass (hehe), you can start with looking at the cd tray to see if it's a samsung or hitachi drive. Use the drive pic at the top of this guide. Use the pic only, not the guide, as it's old and out dated.

looked at the link (thankyou) and it only has 1 small hole in the base of the cd tray so i assume it is a samsung drive ! is that good news or bad ?

Well... it's not bad news. It's not the Hitachi so you don't have to worry about the drive being a 78. Chances are good it's an ms28 drive. And it's flashable, no problem.

thanks for all your help on identifying my console i managed to get in contact with the guy that flashed it whilst i was responding to posts and he has confirmed it can be flashed so thanks again for your responces i hope to get it done on sunday .
i must say these consoles are a huge worry to own ! i have never had so much problems with anything i have purchased in the past and the forums are inundated with nothing but problems about 360's . i havnt read anywhere where someone has owned one from day 1 ,played it every day online and off and not had a prob with it .and now i am coming up to the end of my 1 year warranty i am worried big time as this is my 2nd replacement in a matter of months . thanks again
