My games are all backed up via a Dell Laptop outfitted with a Phillips DVD burner. I was told once that laptop burners aren't the best choice for backing up 360 discs, but they seem to work perfectly fine on my machine. With one exception...

If for example, I am playing a certain game and then want to change to another one, I have to power off the system, AND WAIT FIVE MINUTES before putting the new one in. If I don't wait that five minute interval, any game I put in the machine the next time around won't be recognized - I simply get the "Open Tray" signal. Actually, the exact time that I have to wait between games varies, but in any case it is several minutes, and probably has something to do with the power completely draining out of the system.

Is this normal?

Note: I have noticed that with one game that I burnt with a Desktop PC burner, the game is recognized a lot more readily on the 360 than are my laptop games, and sometimes even works without waiting those few minutes.

No that's not normal. I switch out burned games freely just like they were retail games.

i've got the same problem m8 with my backups but if i play an original copy it works everytime, i tend to have to wait until my 360 is stone cold till my 360 will accept another backup, i use verb's all the time and have tried other media with no difference but always plays originals , could be that my lens is on its way out and is not recognizing the dye on the media while warm.

The idea that it may be the laser going out is a bit disconcerting, m1tchell, especially because my xbox is about 8 days old.

Based on the fact that 1) both of our xboxes always play originals, 2) my xbox plays the game burnt on a PC 90% of the time (even when the system is warm), and 3) the system has the most problems with my laptop-burnt games (verbatim media), I am beginning to think it has something to do with my burner, not the system.

Any other thoughts?

With the open tray error you got 2 possible solutions.
- reburn at 4x
- google " rubberband fix "

I got the error on a brand new 360 I was modding. The rubberband fix didn't work but reburning a 2.4x burnt game at 4x (using Verbs) fixed the problem.

Other's have posted that the rubberband fix worked for them, though.

So give them a shot and post back with your results.

my current 360 is my 2nd one its a samsung drive and nearly a yr old and has only recently started having this problem, i always burn with either clone cd or imgburn there seems to be no problem with the actual disc as they all work on all of my mates modded systems which is why i thought maybe the lens was goin, also the lens could of moved slightly making it more difficult to read certain media but as i say i only get the problem when i change a game. once its booted up and i get a backup up playing it never crashes and i have no other probs until cahnging to a diff backup, i'll try burning on 4x tho and the rubber band theory cheers

i still dont get why mine should play originals and no backups after watching this vid it shows the lazer reading too close to the centre of the disc surely originals data is in the same place as the backed up data.

I've had the open tray 'error' a few times. Almost randomly, not had it for a while now though.
