This thread is not to tell you what chip to buy, just how to avoid the problems I had when I bought my chip. I just got a new playstation2 and thought it would be fun to put a mod chip in. Here's my list of things I should have known before I bought my chip and that you need to know...

1. Is the chip compatible with your PS2?

There are a lot of lists of what chips are compatible with what PS2, but a lot of them are old and don't go past v14 of the PS2. If you're getting a new one it is most likely a v15. Make sure the chip you get is compatible with your playstaion.

2. Is there a wiring diagram for your chip/motherboard combo?

If a diagram has not been released for your chip/motherboard combo you will find it VERY hard to install your chip. If you have tons of experience installing chips you might be able to figure it out, but if your a newb like me you'll be completely lost. Also, the person you pay to install your chip may not be able to do it either without the diagram.

3. The sodder points on the motherboard are VERY small!!!

I have never done any soddering before but I figured it couldn't be that hard. I opened up my PS2 and couldn't believe how small the points are. Unless you have some experience with soddering, I don't see how it can be done. i'm sure those who've done it a 1000 times will say it's easy, but for a first timer it seems very intimidating. Which leads to my next point...

4. Before you order your chip, find someone in your area to install it for you (if you know you don't want to do it yourself).

The reason for this is that if you can't find someone in your area to install it for you, there's no need to pay for shipping on your chip. Instead, pay to have your PS2 sent to a good installer. They can usually sell you the chip as well and will probably give you a deal for buying the chip and the installation.

That's all I can think of for now. I would have loved to know this info before I bought my chip so hopefully it helps you.

Feel free to add to my list with your own suggestions if you have any.

I would Suggest PRACTICING Soldering on some old electronics you dont use anymore (like a PSX or something).

Practice by Modding a PSX, then practice on something else with the smallest Chip legs as possible without soldering two legs together. If you can pull it off, then the PS2 is nothing but ease.
