I don't have a PS2 yet. Which one should I get? The fat one or slim one?

PS2 V7 (fat) seem to have the most reliable laser. You'll have easier mod options available with the fat PS2, since you can install an internal hard drive and run the independence exploit. So any of the fat PS2 V5+ should be fine. I'm sure they're better now, but early slimlines had problems with overheating and require a little more effort if you choose to go with the swap tool/external HD route when loading backups.

How do I find out what version my PS2 is? I just bought a slim version for $60. Not a bad deal, I'd say. Came with a memory card, too.

I just found out I got a version 12. Is this a bad version? Someone stated the early versions of the mini had some problems.

That's the problematic one. Two things are bad about it.
1- The risk of overheating(higher than any other slim).
2- The laser. What's wrong: it runs at a voltage that's too high,
which causes premature wear and premature laser burnout(a laser fix
will fix that problem).
Two other problematic PlayStation 2s are Version 9 and 10(the last fats), SCPH-50001. The problem: a chip(the LA chip) controlling the laser's focus coils. It delivers a dangerous voltage(12V, way too high, has to be 5V) when you put in a scratched disc or a poor quality disc like Memorex. What can go wrong:
1- The laser's coils will burn out.
2- The chip will become damaged due to overheating.
3- The ribbon cable will melt, and it's possible that it melts until
the chip AND the laser block become useless.
My advice: stay away from Versions 9, 10, and 12. If you want a fat, get the Version 7(SCPH-39001). If you want a slim, get a Version 13(SCPH-70001). Two newer ones were released(Version 14(SCPH-75001) and 15(SCPH-77001)), but those ones have some problems with several PlayStation 2 games. As for the chip, get either a DMS4 SE Lite, DMS4 SE Pro, or Matrix Infinity Green Dot. If you want, on the Version 7, you can buy a Network Adapter and an internal hard drive to play your games off of that(this only works for PlayStation 2 games). With the Version 13(this is also possible in the Version 12, but not Version 14 and 15), you can buy an IDE(internal) hard drive add-on(HD Combo) that you can solder to the motherboard's IDE points(they're indicated on the installation diagrams), and use an internal hard drive, like with the fat.

Are there recalls to the version 12? Or is it possible to contact Sony and have them replace it or the laser lens inside it?

I have never heard of any recalls for Version 12 PlayStation 2s except for certain power supplies. Remember this, though, DO NOT SEND IN YOUR CONSOLE TO SONY! I have heard lots of bad stuff about Sony's customer service. I would suggest you find some place that sells the laser fix and somewhere where you can get it installed in your system. As for the power supply, you have no choice but to send it to Sony, but only if yours qualifies for the recall.
