hi there,

i bought a chipped xbox off a friend and would like to install a larger hdd into it.

is this an easy process or am i better off getting a mod fitter to do this?

the xbox is PAL, chip is executor (don't know the version), and has the factory hdd in it yet.

i haven't used it since i bought it but you get any other info neended from it if necessary.

i was thing of fitting a 500gb hard drive as this should allow for all of my game to be stored on there (around 80ish). i have a seperate xbox and 360 for xblive play so i'm not fussed with what needs doing.

any info, tips, guides would be much appreciated.

if that Xecuter is an X3ce then with a backup of your C/E and EEPROM stored on your PC, install the new harddrive in the box, then just hold the white button on the controller one when you turn the box on, this will boot X3 Config Live in the menu select disc tools and it has the option to setup a new harddrive for you, then just FTP the backup of C/E to it and enable locking (optional) and you're all done.

it is an executor 3, i'll get some more details shortly.

with a backup of your C/E and EEPROM stored on your PC

is this an option from within the dashboard? sorry, haven't even used the xbox yet. how would i connect to pc? netowrk cable or some other option?

install the new harddrive in the box, then just hold the white button on the controller one when you turn the box on, this will boot X3 Config Live in the menu select disc tools and it has the option to setup a new harddrive for you

i get this bit.

then just FTP the backup of C/E to it and enable locking (optional) and you're all done.

just need a bit more detail on how to do this and a suitable FTP app.

last q: will a 500gb hdd work/be compatible? is there any specific one or will any 500gb (ide?) drive work?

thanks for the help kc, much appreciated.

sorry just had a look at the hdd lists.

both seagate and maxtor there, i was hoping to get 2 matching hdds for the xbox and my ps2.

another few questions popped up:

what is locking and also would there be a heat issue with the 500gb hdd?

finally (i hope) do i need a different data cable? is the xbox one fine or can i get something better/faster?

regards,
haji.

the C/E backups you do via FTP between the box and your PC, this should have been done the first time the box was modded. i always backup the original drive and burn it to a CD for all my customers along with their EEPROM. if you haven't got backups just boot to X3 Config Live like i mentioned and you'll see the IP address in the lower left of your TV screen, use that as the URL in your FTP client (FlashFXP is what i use, you can use any you like though) and the user name and password are default x3 and x3.

after the backup put the new drive in the box and boot back to X3 Config Live and use the disc tools menu to setup the new drive then FTP the contents back to it and it's done.

unless you've got a particularly hot running drive you wont have any issues that you wouldn't have with any other drive, the air flow in the box isn't that great but it is acceptable in most cases and you can get extended cases with better air flow if need be. on the data cable your drive should be an IDE and the cable included with the box is IDE so they are a perfect fit, if your drive is SATA you'll need an adapter but there isn't allot of room in the box to fit one so I'd stick with the IDE drive.

i would care less about the drives in the box and the PS2 being of the same name brand, you're not going to be swapping them back and forth, the PS2 uses a PS2 master boot record, the box a FATX file system

the locking isn't an issue unless you want to go on XBOX live and i wouldn't recommend it with a modded console so don't sweat the locking issues.

ok, thanks kc!

i could get 2 seagates for £125 each or 2 maxtors for £140 each.

both look fine compatability wise, and theres no concern heat or locking wise now.

i'll hopefully get this all done next week.

thanks alot man!

regards,
haji.

put the new drive in, format/partition it with the configuration menu and then FTP your backup files of C/E back to the new drive.
