I'm buy a new PS2.... I wanted to try to buy an "old"(fat) PS2 for the hard drive enclosure, but I was told that the new ones have a USB port and I have an external hard drive enclosure and a hard drive in it, so that should not be an issue.
I am a complete noob at this.
This is the model I plan on buying: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?...d=1117177358855
What do I need to do, to mod this? Will software mods work on this, if so, what do I need? I'd prefer to not have to physically modify it, if possible. Do I need to buy some piece of plastic to block the laser somehow or what?
Will the "tape and tissue" method( http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/256226 ) work on this version of the PS2?
Yes, I am a noob at this *hangs his head in shame* but I am sure SOMEWHERE out there someone has written a guide on what I need to do, or general tips.....
Anyone help me out?
Edit:
I'm always pretty careful when I buy stuff online. I want to buy magic keys II, given that there IS a healthy dose of fraud associated with buying mod stuff online, i'm worried. I'm also new at this. What is a reputable site I can buy mod stuff from, speciailly magic keys II and the latest version of swap magic? If it is a reputable one that accepts paypal, even better.

hey whats up. i was in your position about 2 weeks ago. after extensive research i concluded that Swap Magic + Magic Keys II was the best route for the PS2 Slim version.
Magic Keys II consists of 3 tools that block the sensors on your PS2. And the Swap Magic are the boot CDs.
You need both in order to play backups.
The good thing about this is that you don't have to open up your PS2 (thus not voiding the warranty)

I have a disc I got from a friend, but I am not sure if it is the original swap magic disc, I have a large feeling it is a copy, the black marker is sort of a give away :/. Is there intentional errors worked into the disc, so I need to buy an original?

nah theres no advantage to the silver version. it's just more rare, i think. what you should look at to determine if your ps2 will be compatible with a certain mod system is the model number (scph_____)
and yeah, you need an original copy of the swap magic CD.

I have a fat ps2, and using the Action Replay that comes with the usb thumb drive, I can play backups with no additional costs.
You can use the ar to load almost all elf's off of the thumb drive.
Also, the internal harddrive is better then the usb harddrives.
While there is software that will let you play stuff of the usb harddrives, they tend to stutter during vids, and some other sort of annoying crap. the faster the harddrive you have connected to it, the less the stuttering is. (with a 7200rpm harddrive connected via a usb to ide connecter, the stutter drops down to about once every 2 seconds or less).
You don't really have the problem with the internal harddrive, I just found I was able to get more games playing off the usb harddrive then I was off the internal harddrive.
I think gamestop/eb games is selling those AR's for about $20. Great price considering all it can do for you.
Of course, you have to find them still in stock, I know I pick up them up everytime I see them (i only have 3).

Unless you've already bought one try as hard as you can to get a fat PS2, slims have all kinds of issues unless you get one of the newest versions. PS2 (all versions) have USB 1.0 which is to slow to effectively run PS2 games at full speed. There are ALOT of games that wont run very fast and a few that wont work at all.
Internal HDD is what I would recommend as games will actually run alot faster than off DVD.
I would also recommend getting an ARMAX with USB drive, so you can setup the memory card exploit to run hdloader and other homebrew programs (like emulators and media players).

It will work but will only be USB speed, which is still slow.

for the amount you're going to spend on a NEW PS2 + Swapmagic + Magic Keys you're so much better going the OLD PS2 Network adaptor route
you can still use Swapmagic with a slide card for games that aren't HDD compatible but you're going to save the life of your laser by using HDLOADER and a HDD in your PS2
for all the tools you'll need you'd spend the same amount if not less than on the NEW PS2 alone
Used FAT PS2 $85 is about average for what I've seen
Swapmagic and a Fliptop Combo from clearxbox.com (where I bought mine)
$32 + Shipping
right there alone that's about the same price as a new PS2 Alone
You already have the HDD so all you'd need then is the network adaptor and you can find those for like $20
Everything else you can d/l as far as the HDD software goes HDLOADER

Already got a new PS2 heh, one of the black slims. I wanted to buy a fat one, but I did not want to buy a used one... finding a new fat one would cost an assload even on ebay.
Edit: Clearxbox accepts paypal and you said they did not rip you off.
Ordering now, thanks for the refference! :D
Later edit: ....and they don't sell magic keys, doah! ><

wow, i just looked on ebay and called local stores, and with the cost of the network adapter i would be better off getting a modchip. The network adapters are going for $50-$60 bux, thats rediculous.
