Okay, I've got the memory card exploit on my memory card and when I stick the trigger disc in it boots up SwapMagic 3.8 (I assume everything is right till here)

I know that I need to refresh the TOC before I can play my backup, so at the SwapMagic 3.8 CODER screen.. where all the options are.. I press eject then stick my Retail Grand Turismo 4 in and push it back in. While its ejected (tray is out) I get the message scrolling "Insert a bigger TOC disc" when its in.. it then says "Not a valid PS2 disc."

What am I doing wrong here?

Also using a version 2 fat PS2.

Thanks in advance for any help! :)

You need to use some kind of swap method, either swap tool or flip top to insert the backup disc without the PS2 knowing.

In original PlayStation 2 models, a "Slide Card" is available. The front of the CD tray must be removed and the slide card is used to eject the disc without the console knowing.

For the newer, Slim PlayStation 2, there are many more options, namely: replacing the original top-loading lid with a new one that allows for easy swapping, or installation of a "Magic Switch" which allows the original lid to be opened without the system realizing it.

Read this on how to make swap tool. Here is a video demonstrating the swap method in action.

Sorry I misinterpreted your post. You mentioned pushing it back in and ejecting in several places and I wasn't sure if you were doing it correctly. I would try using a different original PS2 game to refresh the TOC, GT4 is a dual-layer game and that could be the problem. Should that fail try using CogSwap Loader or CDLoader (you can find the elf files in my sig). Also make sure you're after you put your backup disc in the tray and push the tray back in manually, make sure you return the cog all the way back to the left.

And just to make sure, you are doing it exactly as follows right?

1) Run your loader, by executing the ELF file
2) Hit the eject button
3) Insert an original PS2 game with a high TOC (check http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/182717 for a list of TOC sizes, general rule of thumb is that you want your original PS2 game to be larger than the backup you are swapping it with)
4) Hit eject again so that your original PS2 game goes back in.
5) When the screen text changes, to ?swap to your program disc," use your homemade swap tool to release the tray and swap the disc. Remember to pull the pin back to place after.
6) Then press X twice to load your backup.

My suggestion is to use another disk.
I use cogswap and cdloader and disks thats cool with cogswap doesn't work with cdloader and vice versa.

So basicly, depending on which backup I want to play, i have figured out what combo's work best for it.

Plus, I don't think GT4 disks are good to use, since it one of the most common games that lasers die out reading on (at least with some people I know, that's the only game they get dre's on). I've had really good luck with using demo disks out of mags, like OPM, since they have a lot of files on it, and hopefully at filling the whole disk.

Good luck!
