Near about every dvd that I have burned lately skips or freezes up at some point during the movie. I'm not sure what is causing it or how to correct it. I'm running AnyDVD in the background, DVD Shrink and I burn with Clonedvd2. Please advise if anyone else has had this problem or if you know of a solution. I have used this combination for burning dvds for a long time and never had a problem, until recently.

Thanks in advance for any insight!

If your discs have been working okay up till now, you might have
the same problem I had a while back. It turned out I needed to
use the cleaning disc on my DVD player. Once I did that-no more
skipping and freezing. This may or may not be your problem, but
can't hurt anything to check it out.

LILKAJUN,
I had the same problem with DVD's freezing in my Dvd player. It was not my programs but it was my dirty DVD player I thought. I cleaned it twice and the movies continued to have problems. I tried a few movies in my daughter's DVD player no problem everything ran great. What I didn't understand about my Dvd player it will play normal movies all day long but has problem with the backup DVD's. I did the only thing that I had left to do I purchased another player everything is running great now

DVD ROM is the universal player format. All players are supposed to play DVD ROM, but not all players play +R and -R. Booktyping (or bitsetting) writes data to the DVD +R or +R DL so that a player sees the +R disc as a DVD ROM. Booktyping helps with compatibility with more players. If a player was playing +R and/or -R before, it should continue to do so without booktyping. Not all burner drives are capable of booktyping.

I noticed some thanks, but I wonder if anything was being done differently. Was different media being used from before? Even with the same brand the manufacturer should be checked periodically with something like DVD Identifier. Some drives are quirky about the media. Philraz noted you should keep your firmware up to date. Then you can get into files sizes and compression errors. What is the compression rate and are you using the quality settings with Shrink. A laser getting weak will sometimes cause the error, so there's a bunch of things you can go down the list and check off.

Nobody asked this, but why are you using the software combo you have? AnyDVD and CloneDVD2 will do most movies with no need for DVDShrink. If you're transcoding with Shrink, you're running the files through another trancoder (CloneDVD2) to get to the burning software of the app. Shrink uses Nero by default, but it can use DVD Decrypter or some other burners when reset. If you don't have burner software, both DVD Decrypter and ImgBurn are available for free. You might try using the ripper in the AnyDVD and copy the cleaned files to the hard drive. Turn off (Exit) the AnyDVD and then open the cleaned files in Shrink or CloneDVD2. Do that and tell us if you're still having the same problem.

I use AnyDVD with clonedvd2, but clonedvd2 doesn't have a booktype option. When I absolutely want to booktype my disks (DVD+Rs) as DVD-ROMs, I use AnyDVD with Nero recode 2. Nero will allow you to apply booktyping if your burner supports this feature.

To set this in nero7 or 6:
-run the Nero burning rom application
-close the wizzard/pop-up window that appears
-at the top goto... recorder-->choose recorder
-select/highlight your burner under device then click "options" at the bottom
-you'll see booktype settings
-choose DVD-ROM from the dropdown menu and click ok

If you''re using shrink to autoburn with nero:
-make sure you have "enable burning with nero" checked in shrink's preferences
-when you click on the backup tab (in shrink), the last tab on the right (burn settings) should allow you to apply this feature by checking the "Booktype DVD-ROM" box.

Remember, your burner must support this feature in order to use it.

I also have DVDFab Platinum, it too will allow me to apply booktyping to DVD+R disks, it's part of the software's options.

I have the same issue but let's take this one step back. I use DVDFAB to rip the DVD. I then play the image I just ripped with Windows Media Player and this is where I see the skips. I haven't even burned it yet to a DVD. When I do burn it to DVD the skips are there too. I've tried 2 different DVD readers to rip the DVD from and both give the same result, skipping and freezing.

I'll upgrade to the new version of DVDFAB out mid December and give that a try.

I've noticed this on Superman Returns and Cars.

Forgot to add that I've never had this issue before and only with a few of my newer movies. I've been using Verbatum and TY media. Actually, I've been transferring many of my old backups on Memosuck media to Verbatum using Nero and these play just fine, even now. Just the newer movies are showing this symptom.

I use DVDFAB and Shrink, VOB when needed and Nero to burn. I know it's not my player, DVD readers or media. I've reformatted my computer actually thinking is was something with my HDD of O/S and everything is working just fine. This is frustrating to say the least.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks

Regarding philraz's golden rules:

What is booktyping? (whoops - found the link above so I am cool now).

When using DVD Shrink, do you recommend shrinking to a size smaller than what Shrink automatically does?

Thanks in advance!

Some people suggest it, but I never needed to burn smaller than the suggested Shrink default. The content of a 4.7 is 4.3777...GB. You'd have to have a pretty bad disc to have to burn any farther away from the edge than the Shrink default.

Just notice my earlier post for a simple explanation of booktyping.

The titles you mention have some of the more difficult copy protection. That alone can cause some errors. Condition of your discs can sometimes make a difference. You should back them up as soon as possible so you don't have a lot of scratches to contend with. Then make sure there are no fingerprints or smudges the disc is clean and polished the best possible. If the disc is good and you're only getting problems with heavily protected DVDs, then try some different software. For Free, check out Ripit4Me. If you can't get the setup here, google, I think it may have its own website. I usually rip with AnyDVD and DVD Decrypter with settings recommended by slysoft. One is turn off the DVD cracking in Decrypter. Then I encode with Rebuilder and burn with Nero. I get good copies and rarely have even a small error with the output.

Thanks for the reply. I believe I've fixed it. I was using DVDFAB 3.0.3.5 and after I upgraded to that version is when I started noticing the issue. Didn't matter what I did, I would always gets skips. I even bought the movie Shackelton and even that movie had skips.

I upgraded to DVDFAB 3.0.5.0 and re-ripped the titles mentioned above and presto, not skips, smooth picture and sound.

Now I've uninstalled and re-installed 3.0.3.5 to no avail, even reformated the PC thinking that was it. I simply just uninstalled 3.0.3.5 and installed 3.0.5.0 without even rebooting and it fixed my issues.

Hope this helps someone else, it was very frustrating.

There's a good lesson there. If you start having problems, think about whether you added or changed anything about the time the problem creaped in. A good indicator the change might have caused the problem.

Yeah, Place your blank media in your CD/DVD/OPTICAL disc drive. Once this is done there will be a drop down option that will allow you to choose your burn X speed.:P

Is that after you've put the disc in the drive and let the PC recognize it and you have the drive with the DVD in it selected? Once your files are set up to burn and the above has been done, the burn options should be available in the drop down window. If not, your burner may not be recognizing the disc.

How many burner drives do you have and what discs are you using? Use DVD Identifier and let us know the manufacturer as well as the brand. DVD Identifier is free and if you can't find it here at AD in downloads, just run a google.

The burn options in Shrink (Burn Speed under Burn Settings) are Maximum,4, 6, 8, 12, and 16x. Shrink automatically sets Nero to burn and burns at the set speed unless an expired trial of Nero is in use. That used to cause burning at minimum speed. What I mentioned in the previous post was for using Nero to burn manually. Are you using Nero to burn automaitically with Shrink or using Nero to burn manually?
