DVD Shrink is a great program but it is not updated any more. The first thing that you will need to do is get the copy of DVDFab Decrypter to decrypt the movie before you try to open it in Shrink. You can find DVDFab FREE VERSION and this address http://www.dvdidle.com/free.htm
There are other programs that you can get for free to help you be able to shrink the movie at a good percentage ratio. You can find a lot of them under software at this Ad! Let us know when you face another problem and we will be happy to walk you through the solution.

Now days you don't use Shrink to open a factory dvd unless it's an old one, and then it's not a good idea. The decryption software is out of date. That is part of what syxguns was getting at. Use one of the known good decrytion software programs or program combinations. Rip the decrypted files to the hard drive and then open the files in Shrink. I suggest AnyDVD or RipIt4Me or DVDFab. If that isn't the fix read below.
Hopefully you're in the modern age and using windows XP. In which case there is no ASPI and Shrink shouldn't be asking for it.
I don't know what burner software you have, but you should have it installed and be sure it is working with your burner drive.
Then go in add remove and delete Shrink. Run a registry clean and then reboot and then do a fresh install of Shrink. If you have Nero it will be set to use Nero as the burner automatically. Nero has it's own version of ASPI, separate from the operating system. If you don't have Nero, use the free DVD Decrypter or ImgBurn.

Guess you don't have one if you don't know how to use it. Those are usually installed options. I use Registry Mechanic myself. There's lots of different ones and different people have their favorites. Run Start/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Cleanup and it may be enough.

Glad you got a solution to get your backup. The problem may have been in your gettting a good set of decrypted files or just a fault in the Shrink setup. Shrink is one of the most trouble free apps to be found though. Once you have decrypted and compliant files, almost any of the decent transcoding apps will compress the files to DVD5 and almost all the burners will do a decent job burning. The decryption stage and getting the files compliant is the most important. I just set a friend up with Ripit4Me. It uses DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter, and FixVTS in a setup that all you do is click one button and let it go. Plus it's all free unless Nero is used as the burner. The trial Nero used to work with Shrink even after the trial expiration. I don't know if it still does that or not. He has the retail version. He's singing RipitforMe's praises and he's doing the heavily encrypted releases with ease.

Should be okay. I was wondering if you'd got an older or corrupted installation file. Got my curiosity aroused, but it's best to let it go since you have working software. Good luck with the burning.

nido1-
Shrink is a great program, but even with AnyDVD it can not always open the file. Sometimes the best program to use is DVD Decrypter. As long as AnyDVD is running DVD Decrypter will work great.
There are just a few modifications to make in DVD Decrypter but you can run it with basic settings. I normally run DVD Decrypter with AnyDVD in the background, then I use VobBlanker to get rid of unwanted material, then I use either Shrink or Recode2 to process the file before I use Nero to burn with. Yes, some say that is a long process, but I end up with a great movie with a good compression ratio. You don't want to compress a movie at 60% or lower. I try to keep all of my movies at 70% or higher. This is tougher with some of the newer titles.
PacMan777 gave you some great assistance. I'm sorry I was not available to help. X-Mas has got me running! Happy Holidays All!
