Hey there,
Has anyone figured out a way to make the PS3 DVD playback region free? I purchased a Japanese import PS3 and it plays PS3 games fine, but I am unable to watch region 1 DVDs on it. I was just wondering if anyone has come accross a work around for this yet. I'm sure there is a way to do it if linux is installed, but I would like to avoid that if possible as I was planning on giving it to my little cousin and it will be too difficult for him to use the GUI.
I am in NZ and have a Jap NSTC PS3, the best way to make other DVD,s play for now, is get dycrypter and rip shrink and burn...no region coding and works like a charm

Unfortunately, Blue-Ray movies as well as players are NOT region free. At least not all. As DVD movies with their 6 regions, Blue-Ray discs can be one of 3 regions:
Region A: North America,Central America,South America, Korea, Japan, South East Asia
Region B: Europe, Middle East, Africa, Australia, New Zealand,
Region C: Russia, India, China, Rest of World
For example, the newest Pioneer Elite Blue-Ray disc player BDP-HD1 has region code protection, I have just found it reading it's user manual - purchased in US is coded for region A.
